When places are well-known and popular— historical and modern alike— we might take it for granted that they’ll be around forever. But sadly, many of the world’s best known and culturally significant landmarks are in trouble.

Mount Kilimanjaro’s peak

This mountain, one of the Seven Summits, proves that even giants can fall to climate change due to the vast amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. While the mountain itself, located in Tanzania, isn’t in danger at present, its iconic snow cap might disappear—and shockingly soon. Research found that the snow cap had lost 85% of the total area of its ice fields between 1912 and 2007, and the remaining ice could be history as early as 2030.

Machu Picchu

Located in southern Peru, Machu Picchu is the remains of a huge stone castle that was built during the 15th century. These unbelievable Incan ruins are widely considered one of the must-see spots in South America. However, the site has been a victim of over-tourism, seeing the harmful effects of the crowds it gets as they wear down the structures. In addition, the area surrounding Machu Picchu has seen rapid development of the cities, as well as mudslides and fires, in recent years, leading UNESCO to work for its protection.

Everglades National Park

This stunning Floridian wildlife reserve has sadly found itself fighting for its life in recent years. As ‘the largest subtropical wilderness reserve’ in North America, according to UNESCO, it’s been a beloved travel destination for American citizens for decades, but the damage of time and human activity have not been kind to it. Its survival first came into question after it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1993. But it’s human influence that has become the primary threat, as water flow to the site has decreased and the impacts of pollution have increased, resulting in harmful algal blooms (赤潮). Its vast, diverse wildlife is more threatened than ever before.

Great Theatres in the World

The Palais Garnier

Paris

The Palais Garnier is the best known theater of Paris. In 1669 Louis XIV gave a green light to the opera theater foundation in honor of the poet Pierre Perren and the composer Robert Kamber. Throughout centuries the theater changed its name and location several times up to the moment it appeared in Paris district in the nineteenth century.

Palace of Catalan Music

Barcelona

The Palace of Catalan Music in Barcelona is a quite young opera house founded in 1891. The facade (外观) of the Palace reminds that in Spain it is the place where the European and Arabian cultures connected closely.

But the main feature of the concert hall is its lighting. The illumination (照明) is completely natural. The Palace of Catalan Music’s roof is made of color glass fully. Lights of the sun create an indescribable effect!

Vienna State Opera

Vienna

Vienna State Opera was built in 1869. Its opening was marked by Mozart’s opera Don Juan. On the other hand, the building often became the object of severe criticism since it was built in extremely widespread neo-renaissance style.

La Scala Opera House

Milan

In 1776, the Milan architect Giuseppe Piermarini liked the piece of earth on the site of the destroyed Church of Santa Maria Della Scala. Frances Stevens Reese Wooldland Trail Guide

The Woodland Trail was opened to the public on October 21, 1997. Boscobel’s Board of Directors adopted a formal decision of naming the Woodland Trail in honor of former Boscobel board member, Fances Stevens Reese (1917-2003), one year after his death.

The trail(小径) is approximately 10 miles in length, leading down to Constitution Forest. When the West Point Glass Factory was operating during the Civil War, trees for miles around were cleared to provide firewood. Walking out of the forest, you will find a large mass of native hard rock about three billion years old.

Throughout this country path, you will find picture boards identifying birds and plants local to this region. You will also find signs with historic and environmental information written by area specialists.

When you take a walk through this “undiscovered” forest land, please be a considerate guest.

Before walking the trail, please purchase a pass in the Carriage House. Plan ahead, so you will be back by closing time.

Follow the trail markers and remain on the trail. Besides protecting the fragile forest ecosystem, you will reduce the risk of poison plants and snakes.

Leave rocks, plants, animals and art works where you see them so that the person behind you can have the same experience.

Carry out whatever you carry in because there are no rubbish containers on the trail. If you happen to see a piece of litter, be a good guest and pick it up.

A.Leave the wildlife undisturbed.

D.Protect the markers of the Woodland Trail.

There is so much to see and do on the Disney Dream. During my 2-day cruise (乘船游览) I tried to experience as much as I could. Here are some of my favourite things about the Disney Dream.

AquaDuck

The first water coaster at sea will not disappoint you! The coaster spans (横跨) 765 feet, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the decks (甲板) below. At one point, the ride takes you 12 feet over the side of the ship.

Oceaneer Club & Oceaneer Lab

I was totally blown away by the childcare on the Disney Dream. The best part is the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab for kids aged 3-10. Once inside, kids are free to run from club to club. There are games, activities and crafts (手工) that will keep your children entertained for hours.

Pink at The District

There are five places at The District, but my favourite was Pink—the champagne bar. This place is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink with friends.

Nemo’s Reef

One of my biggest disappointments at other cruise ships is the lack of water play for young kids. Every ship usually has a pool and water slide, but they are often overcrowded. Nemo’s Reef is a covered water play area with no standing water. Even my six-year-old son had a good time!

“Disney’s Believe” Stage Show

Entertainment on cruise ships can be not very good, but not on the Disney Dream. What’s new on the Disney Dream is “Disney’s Believe”—a musical show featuring your favourite Disney characters.

If you’re on the Disney Dream next time, don’t miss them. Have fun!
