Mr. Asada is just one of many growers in Shizuoka, one of Japan’s largest wasabi-growing(山葵种植)regions, who must face rising challenges from global warming and the effect of untended forests. Already. these hazards have gradually weakened the centuries-old culture of wasabi in the area and damaged the future of one of the area’s most important agricultural products and its tourism business.

Over the last decade, the number of wasabi produced in Shizuoka has dropped by close to 55 percent, according to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The wasabi that comes in tubes and packets is actually a mixture of wasabi and horseradish(辣根)—or includes no wasabi at all. These days. almost only expensive restaurants have access to fresh wasabi. giving their customers a chance to experience the unique flavor and traditional culture of wasabi.

Wasabi plants grow up in spring water that flows down from the mountains, helping to improve their flavor and sweetness. Over time. local growers say, the spring water has worsened in quality due to a large number of cypress trees which grow like crazy in the untended forests.

Global warming has upset the balance even further. The delicate wasabi plants, which take more than a year to be full-grown, do best in conditions no higher than about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. In recent years, heat waves in Japan have regularly pushed temperatures into the 90s and even above 100 degrees. causing more stems to rot.

Government researchers and local growers have started to experiment with crossbreeding in an effort to develop better wasabi varieties that will grow strong even in the rising heat. The challenge is that. unlike with other crops such as cucumbers or tomatoes. getting seeds and growing seedlings from wasabi requires advanced technology. Most growers rely on specialized companies to clone seedlings in labs and greenhouses. Crossbreeding new varieties needs difficult pollination(授粉)efforts, and most of all. time.

In a video, an anxious elephant is pacing back and forth. However, the animal instantly calms down upon hearing a song of American singer and actress Cher. The video was the evidence of the pop singer and animal activists' four-year-long efforts to save Kaavan, the world's loneliest elephant.

Kaavan was just a year old when Sri Lankan officials gifted him to Pakistan in 1985. The now 36-year-old Asian elephant spent a large part of the next three decades chained in a small space at the Marghazar Zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. He was only brought out regularly to entertain zoo visitors. To make matters worse, his partner Saheli, a female elephant who arrived at the zoo in 1990, died in 2012, leaving the social animal with no companion. Lonely Kaavan's mental and physical health rapidly became worse.

The poor animal's sufferings first caused activists to start a social media campaign that urged Pakistani officials to move him to an elephant sanctuary(保护区). However, their request fell on deaf ears. In 2016, Cher was looking through her Twitter when she noticed messages by fans urging her to help Kaavan. Cher reached out to fellow animal activists Mark Cowne and his wife, Gina Cowne, to help her launch a social media campaign to help Kaavan. They first pushed for Kaavan to rid chains and then persuaded the zoo to add a tin roof over his shelter, water in the pool, and a tire for him to play with.

While the reforms were encouraging, the team soon realized that more needed to be done and set up Free the Wild, a nonprofit organization devoted to rescuing Kaavan and other wild animals in similar situations. It took four years, but in 2020, an Islamabad high court ordered the Marghazar Zoo to shut down and relocate all its animals to new homes.

For Kaavan, that meant taking a seven-hour flight to the beautiful Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. The elephant is adjusting extremely well to his new home and has even picked his favorite female elephant from the three he has been interacting with since arrival.

Bats appear many times in literature and history, and have different roles depending on where you find them. But bats have an important role to play in our eco-system, and some of them are becoming endangered. International Bat Night was established to help people grasp some facts about bats. While we often think of bats as predators (捕食者) feeding on blood, the truth is quite different. Yes, there are bats that feed on blood, but they mostly feed on insects.

Bats are one of the major factors in reducing the numbers of obnoxious night insects like mosquitoes (蚊子) . If you’re a camper, you’ll know how uncomfortable mosquitoes can make an otherwise pleasant camping. There are also bats that feed on nectar (花蜜) , and help to spread the seeds of plants, in many cases where they’re the only ones working to help those plants produce! These are just a few of the qualities that bats own. There are far more than that, and International Bat Night is a great time to learn about them.

At International Bat Night, you can enjoy the quiet of the evening and watch the skies in your nearest bat habitat. Maybe it’s a night out in the woods, or just sitting at your front door if you’re fortunate enough. If you’re feeling both generous and adventurous, you can head out to one of your local Bat Conservatories and celebrate the night with the workers there while making a contribution to their work. Volunteer with them and help protect our flying friends!
