Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.

When Nightingale was 17, she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.

She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care. Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.

Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people. Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.

In 1854, England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded. People demanded that something be done about it. A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So, in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital.

She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.

At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.

After the war, Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally, in 1860, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.

If you love something enough but lose it, it may just find its way back to you.

That’s a lesson a Connecticut man learned this week, when he miraculously (神奇地) recovered a dollar bill that his wife had signed years before.

Peter and Grace Bilillo were married for 50 years before Grace lost her battle with cancer. They first met in Peter’s home in Sicily when his mother introduced her unmarried son to the pretty girl down the street.

It was love at first sight. “We got married in 40 days,” said the 86-year-old man.

About seven years ago, the devoted couple each took a dollar bill and signed the names - Grace on one and Peter on the other - as a sign of their love.

“I said, ‘This dollar bill is going to be in my wallet forever,”’ Peter Bilillo said.

Forever didn’t last as long as Peter hoped, though - two years after signing the two bills, he fortuitously spent them. When his wife died, he was heartbroken.

“I felt sorry, very sorry. I thought we were never going to see those two dollars back again,” he said.

So, imagine Peter’s surprise when seven months after his beloved wife’s death, he took his granddaughter to a local subway shop, glanced at the change handed back to him by the cashier and saw his beloved Grace’s name staring at him from one of the dollar bills.

“I never thought I was going to get that dollar back again,” he said. “The first thing I said was, ‘Grace, she did this to make me happy.’”

“It’s a miracle to get it back,” he told reporters. “Who knows how many millions of people got that dollar in their hands?”

Peter says he hopes that, with a little help from Grace, the dollar with his signature will make his way back to him as well.

Her encouragement seemed to work wonders. Even more students began to hand in their homework, and studied much harder than before.

Li says she believes in the strength of "the devoted style of teaching and schooling". "Compared with knowledge, the students are more eager for an emotional connection and the feeling of being cared for," says Li.

Guo Yanhong, a student of Li, came to her office almost every day and asked Li to check his homework or explain problems. Sometimes he even seemed to be quite happy if Li criticized him for making mistakes.

By talking to Guo, Li got to know his mother had left home when he was young, and his father went far away for work.

One day, when Li was examining Guo's homework, she saw a wound on his hand, and reminded him to dress it to prevent infection. Her caring words hit Guo hard. He later wrote in an essay that he turned around and burst into a flood of tears upon hearing Li's words.

"After reading his composition, I thought it was too exaggerated(夸大的). How can someone be moved so much by such simple words? So I reminded my students not to fake(掩饰) emotions in their compositions and that they need to express their true feelings," says Li.

But at her last class at Hanji school, when she asked if any student wanted to say something to her, Guo put up his hand first and said: "Ms Li, I didn't fake my emotions in the composition. All that I wrote was true. Maybe you thought what you said were simple words, but for me, who has never received much care, you were just like my mother in that moment."

Li still feels regret for her misunderstanding of Guo.

"Guo made me understand that I should pay more attention to my way of talking to students, since a teacher's words can be really influential," she says.
