Every neighborhood needs a bookstore. One inspired woman took this mission to heart and opened her dream bookstore. Bronx Bound Books is a community project on wheels, ensuring everyone in the neighborhood has a bookstore nearby.

Ever since DeVaughn was a child, she dreamed of opening a bookstore. Adopted by her grandmother, she spent many childhood hours exploring bookshops. “My grandmother was an educator in the South Bronx,” DeVaughn explained. “She read to the people in our community who couldn’t read. Some people’s lives depended on the information she gave them.”

Although her grandmother had passed away, DeVaughn never forgot her dream. She knew her thought was important as the nearest bookstore was one hour away. It was hard for local people to get books. After she was introduced to the idea of a mobile bookshop, she soon wanted to put it into practice.

DeVaughn understood that the community was the most important aspect to ensure the success of this project, so she began by reaching out to friends and neighbors.“Your community is the most valuable resource when you start a small business,”she said.“If you’re determined enough to let them know what you want, they’ll try their best to make it happen for you.”She collected used books from friends and good neighbors and received a small business loan. Soon she had a bus, loads of books, and kindness from lots of warm-hearted helpers.

DeVaughn soon realized that she was making a huge impact on the community. Now she has plans to partner with schools and book fairs, and even get a second bus. Not only is DeVaughn inspiring people in her community to purchase their cherished books and enjoy reading, but her own family also benefit from her encouraging action.
