One man’s trash is another man’s treasure is absolutely the case in Turkey where garbage collectors started collecting books that have been thrown away and ended up opening a library.

It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it snowballed from there. Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills (垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow, so did word of mouth. Soon, local residents started donating books directly. The library was initially available only to the garbage employees and their families to use but as the collection grew, so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017.

“On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others were looking for these books,” Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN. “We started to discuss the idea of creating a library from these books. When everyone supported it, this project happened.”

All the books that are found are sorted and checked for condition. If they pass, they go on the shelves. Today, the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section that even has a collection of comic books. An entire section is devoted to scientific research and there are also books available in English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and educational programs.

“Village school teachers from all over Turkey are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN. The government has to hire a full-time employee to manage the library.

This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁)are in great danger ,due to warming oceans. Conservationists are worried about how to save them, but a new study might come as music to their ears.

A team of scientists came up with an unusual idea to play underwater sounds along degraded(退化) coral reefs of Australia's Great Barrier Reef that would copy the usual noises heard on a healthy and active reef. When they did so, they found that fish were attracted to the music and more willing to hang around.

Dr. Stephen Simpson, a researcher at the University of Exeter, UK, said that coral reefs are remarkably noisy places full of various sounds. Young fish will be attracted to these sounds after they spent their early stage in the open ocean. However, once a reef becomes degraded, it smells and sounds less attractive to the young fish, who choose to settle elsewhere, thus speeding up further degradation of the reef.

In the experiment, reefs were given one of three experimental treatments. They either had no loudspeaker, a fake loudspeaker, or a real loudspeaker that played reef sounds. Playback occurred for 40 days, always at nighttime, which is when fish settlement typically occurs.

After 40 days, there were twice as many young fish on reefs with real loudspeakers than the other two kinds of reefs, with no significant differences between the two control treatments. And biodiversity also increased by 50 %, with more species attracted to the sound.

While the presence of fish alone cannot restore a coral reef to good health, study author Dr. Mark Meekan explained that “recovery is encouraged by fish that clean the reefs and create space for corals to regrow”. This could promote a “snowball effect”, with other fish responding positively to communities founded earlier, causing further increases in settlement.

The researchers hope that this discovery can add to reef restoration efforts because, at this point ,the reefs need all the help they can get.

Newsletter Principal’s Message
Dear parents,

I write to you this week to introduce a new idea for us all to think about. ‘Oh, no!’ I hear you say, ‘She’s got another idea!’ It is true that I often suggest new ideas, especially in areas that affect your children’s future, such as the preservation of our planet. We are the only local school that has a ‘Walk or Pedal to School Day’ once a week, rather than once a month or even once a term! We have four different bins for our waste products, not just three! But I think we at Spire can do more. We are responsible for the future of our world.

I have become increasingly concerned about the amount of unnecessary packaging in our everyday lives. If we don’t do something about this now, the damage to the environment will be enormous.

Last week I walked around the grounds at recess time, talking as I often do with any student who wanted to chat - many did, I am glad to say. I kept seeing your children holding little plastic packets with a few biscuits in one side and some cheese spread in the other. When the children had eaten, the little packets became waste material! I found myself wondering why those biscuits could not have been spread with cheese at home and brought to school in a re-usable container. Other children were drinking juice from cardboard boxes. Why not a washable plastic bottle? At our canteen I saw a child buy a sushi roll and apply soy sauce from a cute little plastic fish. That fish ended up on the ground until I asked the student to put it in the bin - more rubbish! Why not use a large bottle from which the sauce could be shared? (For that matter, how awful are those little tomato sauce containers given with meat pies – very dangerous if flicked into your eye!)

I know how busy your lives are but you and I need to give children the same message about unnecessary packaging. How many nights a week do you eat takeaway? Plastic boxes of beef in black bean sauce, plastic bags of lettuce with the paper bag of spring rolls, little plastic containers of sauces. All these things increase the amount of waste. I am told you can buy carrots that are already peeled, washed and sliced - in another plastic bag - but why not prepare your own vegetables for the lunch boxes?

I know reducing packaging will be a challenge at school and at home but it is one we must confront. I will be introducing a curriculum unit to teach about sustainability.

As usual, your comments are welcome.

Denise, you need to reconsider. It is a great pity if we don’t enjoy the benefits of 21st century living because of an unclear idea about what’s good for the environment.

My partner and I have always supported your green ideas about the environment. Our kids walk to school every day! They put their rubbish in the correct bins. But mornings are already chaotic in our house. How much worse would it be if we had to spread cheese on biscuits (and won’t they go soft)? You wouldn’t believe how many plastic bottles we have lost during our time at the school. And filling them - another task taking time in the morning. Both of us parents have to get to work as well.

Finally, why shouldn’t parents have the occasional night without cooking? Takeaway food is often a great help to busy people.
