When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.

One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”

“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.

When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the two-story brick building.

“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.”

So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.

Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows.

We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the block.

Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do? Our ball is inside the school.”

“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”

“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.

“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.

“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad?”

“I don’t know,” my brother answered.

Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads drooping.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Our house has always been full of plant life. My mom has green thumb (园丁能手). Every summer, she transforms our backyard into a fruit and vegetable farm. For two months, our dinner plates are filled with snow peas, sweet green tomatoes and spicy peppers.

Mom puts the same care and attention into her family as she does into the houseplants and garden. I grew under the sunshine of her smile I loved spending summer afternoons digging up worms in the backyard with my mom. I listened to stories about her childhood in remote northern China. Her favorite was about how she used to get up before the sun to get to school and how the corn stalks (玉米杆), which grew twice as tall as her on both sides of the path, moved in the wind, making her scared.

This November will mark 21 years since my parents left their comfortable life in China for Canada’s cold weather. Their first years were hard. They got by in a rented basement apartment. My mom held me in her lap while she sewed wedding dresses. Compared with my mom, I’ve had an easy life.

I’ve been thinking lot about my identity and how it was shaped by my mom’s influence. I might have never discovered a love for reading if she hadn’t read me a bedtime story every night or a love of music if she hadn’t taught me to play the piano. I have so much to learn, so much still to do. But thanks to my mom, I’ve got solid roots that I can draw on as I grow into my future.

My goal for university is to keep plants alive in my dorm for an entire year. My mom has been teaching me how. In September, I’ll go off to university, and these plants will sit on my dorm windowsill (窗台). They’ll stay alive because I’ll take care of them the same way that my mom took care of me. They’ll thrive, even. How could they not, when they’re supported by one (and a half) green thumbs?

It wasn’t fair.

Aminah always studied hard, so there was nothing unusual about her receiving top marks at the end of the year. But Farhan was often playing with the village boys. To help motivate him this year, their father had promised to buy him a bicycle if his grades improved. It really touched Farhan.

At the end of the school year, Aminah received top marks as she always did. And; as usual, her parents gave her100 rupees as a reward.

For the first time, Farhan got top marks too. True to his word, their father came home with a bicycle. It was well used. But to Farhan, it was the most beautiful bicycle in Pakistan. Farhan’s friends cheered when they saw it. It was understood that something as precious as a bicycle would be shared with everyone.

Well, almost everyone.

After a few days of watching Farhan and the village boys learning to ride, Aminah and her friends grew resentful (愤恨不满的). They spent afternoons on the hill just north of the village, watching the lazy brook flow at the hill’s foot. They could hear the boys cheering on the other side of the hill. “Why doesn’t he let us ride, Aminah?” asked Fatima. Aminah shrugged.

“He and the other boys just want the bicycle all for themselves!” replied Shehnaz.

Sarah shook her head. “But Aminah is his baji (姐姐)! He should share with her.” As they talked, the boys’ noise grew closer. Aminah looked up and saw her brother on his bicycle at the top of the hill. “Look! I can do it!” he yelled. The boys cheered. Suddenly he and the bike were rushing in the direction of the girls, toward the brook.

“Stop the bike!” the kids yelled.

“I can’t!” Farhan grabbed the handlebars. His body was locked.

Aminah jumped up. “Quick! I need your scarf!” Fatima and Shehnaz slipped their scarves off their shoulders and tossed them to Aminah, who removed her own scarf and quickly tied thick knots, connecting the scarves together.

Stephen and a Bowl of Noodles

Stephen,a 14-year-old boy, was seen walking alone in the street. It was almost 10 o’clock at night.

His eyes were filled with tears when he recalled (回想起) the quarrel he had with his mother this evening. His mom asked about his low grades in the recent exam, and Stephen replied with a careless attitude. So she scolded (训斥) him for being so careless. Stephen got so upset that he quarreled with his mother and then stormed out of the house without realizing he was a so at fault.

He walked for hours, cold and hungry. Suddenly, a delicious smell caught his attention. It was from a small noodle shop. Stephen stopped in front of the shop, eager for a bowl of hot noodles but he didn’t have even a single penny in his pocket. With a sad face, he stood there for a minute and decided to leave.

Just when he was about to go away, the shop owner saw him and invited him in. Stephen said he had no money for the food. The shop owner smiled, saying, “It’s OK. I won’t charge you for it.” Then the shop owner served him a bowl of delicious noodles.

Stephen was in tears when he ate the noodles. The shop owner asked what had happened. Stephen told him about the quarrel with his mother and that he felt his mother did not understand him.
