It was a cold, sunny December day when I set out for a run in Moab, Utah, with my dog, Taz.

About an hour into my ________ along a remote canyon (峡谷) trail, I hit a patch of black ice (透明薄冰) and then ________ 60 feet into the canyon. I wasn’t paralyzed, but I was in great ________. Taz took off through the canyon and I lay there thinking about my family and friends. There was more that I wanted from life.

Taz returned, ________ . Then I heard an engine in the distance. I cried with joy. It ________ that Taz had found a search and ________ team. I was airlifted to the hospital, where doctors found I had lost almost half the ________ in my body. If the rescue team had arrived later, I wouldn’t have ________ it. From outside the truck, White asked DeAngelis if he was OK. ”No,“ he replied, in a haze. DeAngelis, a diabetic (糖尿病患者), was ______ facing dangerously low blood sugar.

Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese? There was only one way to find out. So on a chilly January evening, the two friends ventured (冒险) onto the _________ pond near their homes in Frankfort, Illinois, to get a better look. First they threw a rock onto the ice to _________ it. Cruz told NBC 5 Chicago. “Then we stepped on it.” _________ the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps. Then he crashed through the _________ frozen surface. “There was no sound, no crack.” he told NBC 5 Chicago. “I just fell through instantly.”

The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their limbs. Any chance of their _________ themselves was slipping away (溜走). Cruz was sure he was going to die. Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started __________ for help.

John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the grocery store, heard her. He quickly __________. Seeing the boys, he __________ a nearby buoy (救生圈), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the water. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and pulled them back to land.
