Back in 1958, I was crazy about the Norfolk and Western 746. The smooth bullet-nose engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed to have cast a spell on me.

Together the engine and tender measured a little shy of 2 feet—enormous by the toy train standards of the day. Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high.

Unfortunately, the amazing 746 also had an amazing price—$50, equal to about $450 today. That was far more than my grandfather could afford. Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound! But that was the best that my grandfather could give me at that time.

Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Complicated sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, nor did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind. On an ordinary day, however, I happened to see the 746 outside the window of a train show. Just one look, I could not look away. Childhood memories that I tried to hide in the depths of my heart raced through my mind, happy or sad.

That day I took the 746 home and placed it in the centre of the room, and let my childhood dream sing its way around me. Smoke rose out from the engine and the soft song sounded from its tender. It seemed as if I could see the soft light in grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.

My daughters are lovely and attractive. The 4-year-old has big blue eyes and always wears a smile. The 7-year-old’s long strawberry blond hair and sweet smile are already turning the boys’ heads. I love everything about these girls, and they know it.

But I try not to tell them they’re beautiful. My young daughters are totally innocent when it comes to the pressures of being a woman in our society. They know nothing about plastic surgery, diets, “feeling fat” models or eating disorders. We adults know all too much about such things and in the face of this distorted reality we tend to start telling our girls, as soon and often as possible, how beautiful they are.

I know this is wonderfully well-intentioned, and that we want to raise our girls’ confidence from the very start. Here’s the thing, though. We might think we’re building our daughters up by telling them that they are beautiful to us no matter what, but what we’re also doing is bringing the beauty pressure home to our littlest girls. The more I talk about beauty and looks, even in a positive way, the more I’ m conveying the importance of those things.

However, it doesn’t mean I don’t praise my girls. Instead of saying “You look beautiful!” I might say the more specific “Don’t you look fancy today!” or “Those colors go so well together.” It means that I treat my daughters not as my little dolls, but as real people who are developing their own sense of self and style. It means that they are in charge of how they look.

Naturally, I buy most of my girls’ clothes. But I don’t usually manage their outfit choices. My daughters can go girly with necklaces, or they can choose to give up dresses altogether. Of course we’ve seen some mismatching, but they own those styles. They never ask if they look pretty, and they walk with an easy confidence that has nothing to do with what I or anyone else will say about how they look. And that’s the spirit I want them to take into their teens and adulthood.

My name is Kenny, and my twin brother is Kevin. Kevin was born with autism (孤独症). When we began high school, I would see how rude the kids were being to Kevin and I knew it was just not right. One day, a student walked past my brother and shouted rudely at Kevin. I had to stand up for my brother.

I avoided physical conflict but I made sure that my point was made using my most powerful weapon — my voice. I said, “Look at him. We have the same heart. We live on the same earth. All because he has an intellectual disability, you treat him differently?”

Kevin and I needed to make a change in our school and community — a change towards respect and we knew sport was the perfect tool. Through our participation in United Sports where people with and without intellectual disabilities play together on the same team, Kevin and I found a way to change our school environment.

At first it was very challenging for us to work together because Kevin is not always very good at communication, but together we worked tirelessly on exercises during practice. All of our hard work was paid off during our first soccer battle. Everyone on the team was nervous about how it was going to go, but when my teammates and I stepped onto the soccer field, I noticed something that filled my heart with pure happiness. We were a team. We were friends. And all the students and volunteers were there to cheer on the team and our amazing players.

Kevin turned to me, broke out in tears and said, “I finally feel included.” Kevin had finally found a place to belong within our school community. Our team played like rock stars and Kevin had a great shot that helped to tie the game.

After that day, all of our lives changed. There was a new atmosphere in our school — one of respect and inclusion. All of my teammates walked around school with a sense of pride and courage.
