If Natalie Morales had to describe her mom in just one word, she would pick: survivor. That’s because her mom, Penelope Morales had a tough childhood. “Her mother wasn’t ready to be a mom and gave her up to her grandmother,” says Natalie, “I think she often felt in life like she wasn’t wanted and wasn’t loved.”

Penelope Morales put herself through college and it was there that she met Natalie’s dad, who was serving in the military. They fell in love and married, and her life as a military mom of three children became a great adventure. “She basically raised us moving from place to place. I was born in Taiwan, China, but we lived in Panama, Brazil and Spain. And my mom was the constant,” says Natalie, “She would always make sure that when we got home from school, we felt like we had our number-one fan, our champion right there, waiting for us.” Along the way, Natalie learned many things from her mother, which she carries on in her role as a mother of two sons.

As a Mother’s Day gift, Natalie treated her mom to a day of pampering (宠爱). “I want my mom to feel like a queen,” she says. And as part of the surprise, Natalie brought along an old photo of her mother, which she wanted to recreate. “I think it was taken in the mid-60s. So she was in her early to mid twenties. She’s just absolutely a beautiful woman. But she’s looking in the mirror. It’s like not knowing really her future, but knowing where she’s come from,” describes Natalie. “That picture just speaks so much to me. I want her to see what she created in that mirror, and that she gave us all something so great.”

“It’s just an amazing experience to take this picture and have Natalie do it. I could never imagine in my entire life,” says Penelope Morales, who adds that she’s very proud of her daughter, “All I want her is to be happy and to raise her children the same way,” she says.

We were on a day-trip to Scarborough in 1965 when I was four, and what strikes me is the contrast (对比) between me, small in summer dress, and my grandfather ,tall in his trilby hat (呢帽) that he always wore outdoors.

Being a teacher is a rewarding career when it comes to changing lives, but it’s obviously one that comes with plenty of stresses and difficulties too.

Seeking help for a child who is so obviously in need isn’t easy. Often, you feel ignored by the government. You feel upset that there isn’t anything you could personally do to help a needy and sensitive member of your class.

That’s exactly how Chelsea Haley, aged 24 at the time, felt when she met fourth-grade student Jerome Robinson while working for Teach for America in Louisiana for the first time.

The pair didn’t get off to the best start, with Jerome, the “problem child”, almost driving Chelsea from teaching. But when Chelsea put her foot down and became determined to work more closely with Jerome, she learned the cause of his rude behavior: a bad home situation. Chelsea was eager to help Jerome, and realized that he needed more than just academic support.

By 2016, a year after meeting him, Chelsea had adopted (收养) Jerome and his brother Jace.

Adopting a child doesn’t come cheap, and Chelsea spent all the money in her bank to see the process through.

In her first few years of raising the boys, she lived on credit cards and postponed her student loan.

As Chelsea lived with her two adopted sons, she worked hard to repay her debts. She took on extra tutoring jobs outside of school hours, moved in with her parents, and even delivered groceries for cash. Along the way, she was learning how to be the best mom to Jerome and Jace, cooking for them and cheering them on at football matches.

And now, just five years later, Chelsea can proudly say that she has paid off nearly $50, 000 of debt. Now that she’s finally out of debt, Chelsea has plans to buy a house and save up for the boys’ college education.

“It allows me to focus on the boys’ future,” she said. “Saving money for them, and not spending it on my past.”
