The heat wave that broke high temperature records in five European countries a week ago is now over Greenland, 【小题1】 (cause) the surface of the island’s vast ice sheet to melt at near-record levels and a huge 【小题2】 (lose) of ice in the Arctic. On Wednesday alone, more than 10 billion tons of ice was lost to the oceans by surface melt, which is equal to about 4,000,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Melting 【小题3】 (increase) in recent decades because of climate change and has been decreasing accumulation from snow. Previously, during the 1970s and the 1980s, Greenland lost an average of 50 billion tons of ice each year. From 2010 to 2018,that figure shot up to 290 billion Tons 【小题4】 (annual). Next summer, the extent of the melt could surpass (超过) the record set in 2012,【小题5】 about 97% of the ice sheet’s surface began to melt, NASA-JPL Caltech reported at the time.

Greenland, the world’s 【小题6】   (large) island, lies between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, with 82 per cent of its surface covered in ice. 【小题7】 June 2019 study by scientists in the U.S. and Denmark said melting ice in Greenland alone would add between 5 and 33 centimeters to the rising 【小题8】 (globe) sea levels by the year 2100. 【小题9】 all the ice in Greenland melted, which would take centuries, the world’s oceans would rise 【小题10】 7.2 meter.

Saving the Earth

One day, I 【小题1】（go）with the group to a nearby river. We wanted to check 【小题2】 it was clean. We did many scientific tests to see if the river was 【小题3】（health）.

Surprisingly, it was! We still, though, took any rubbish 【小题4】 we could find out of the river. We wanted to make sure fish could live there 【小题5】（happy）.

Recently, I helped the group plant 【小题6】（flower） at our school. We're hoping the flowers will bloom（开花） this spring and make the school 【小题7】 （look） beautiful. How did we pay for all the plants? We made T-shirts and sold 【小题8】 to our friends! We've still got some money left from 【小题9】（sell） the T-shirts. We hope to use it to buy some recycling bins（回收箱） 【小题10】 the school.

Koalas usually get the water they need from the eucalyptus (桉树)leaves they eat, 【小题1】 as drought and wildfires caused by climate change dry out their food 【小题2】 (supply), many koalas are starting to drink water.

Robert Frend, a farmer from New South Wales, Australia, 【小题3】 (notice) how thirsty the koalas got and helped researchers at the University of Sydney bring them water. Frend invented something called Blinky Drinkers, a water station 【小题4】 (attach) to trees so that koalas can drink all they want.

In April 2016, researchers set up 10 of these water stations on the ground and up in the trees on a large piece of land 【小题5】 a sizable population of koalas. They also built up a surveillance (监视) system 【小题6】 (see) how much the koalas were using the Blinky Drinkers.

【小题7】 they found was surprising: The koalas drank a lot, even waking up during the day, when they 【小题8】 (normal) sleep, to go to drink water from the stations on the ground. All of the Blinky Drinkers 【小题9】 (visit) 一193 times in total. And this was in the fall and winter seasons, when the heat isn’t so severe.

Researchers were excited to find out something new about how animals change 【小题10】 (they) behavior based on climate change and worried about the future of the koalas.
