I had an independent and clever dog named Stickeen. He enjoyed the delicious food that my family prepared for him every day. He often ran out of my sight when walking with me.

Early one morning, I went to explore a nearby glacier (冰川). Stickeen followed me, and together we went upon the glacier. Later, I discovered that we were trapped between two very deep cracks (裂缝) in the glacier. The only way across it was a very thin ice that connected the cracks. I made a path across the “bridge” and got to the other side. But my dog was afraid to have a try and began to cry. After taking another careful look at the large cracks, he ran away hopelessly to find some other crossings. By the time he got back, he was confused of course.

When I reached the other side, he screamed louder than ever, and after running back and forth without searching for a good way to escape, he would return to the edge (边缘) of the crack, crying as if in the sadness of death. I called again and again in a sure voice to come on and fear nothing, but he would think for a moment, look down again at the “bridge”, and shout his unshakable thought that he could never, never come that way, and then lie back hopelessly, as if screaming, “O-o-oh! What a place! No-o-o, I can never go-o-o down there!” At last, I seriously shouted to him that now I must certainly leave him and I could wait no longer if he could not come.

When we first met Lucky, we were surprised at his mini figure. The Labrador (拉布拉多) dog was born last Friday and was one of the four babies. He was the tiniest one we had ever seen, weighing less than 150 grams at birth.

The newborn puppy had a low body temperature and kept trembling all the time. The dog mother seemed too tired to nurse the weakest one while feeding other kids. He was so weak that we didn’t think he could make it to the morning.

I, along with my eight-year-old daughter, Alice, the smallest one in our family, stayed up with him all night. We milked his mother and used an small-sized bottle to hand-feed him. When Lucky got too sleepy to eat, we put honey on his gums (牙龈) to give his low blood sugar a quick boost, an old trick we’d learned from other dog keepers.

I slept on the couch with him on top of me. Alice held the little dog to raise his body temperature, but it failed. He still trembled with cold. Then we used a thermos (热水瓶) and changed the hot water every two hours. Meanwhile, We constantly checked the thermos temperature to avoid burning his delicate skin.

The next day, to our relief, Lucky took a turn for the better. His body temperature recovered to normal, but he appeared hungry. We started to nurse him with a regular baby bottle.

On our farm we have 15 goats plus chickens and dogs. But Lucky was too little to keep outside. Worrying that other animals could have pushed him around or harmed him, we decided to keep him indoors. We were fortunate to meet the neatest one-because he rarely made messes.

Katie had always felt like she never connected with anyone. There was no one she considered a friend. So, when her parents decided to move, she was okay with it. She didn't feel sad because she wasn't leaving anyone behind. She was eight when they moved to a new town. It wasn't that different from where they had lived before. There were a lot of trees and kids running around outside, riding bikes, and playing. One day her mother caught her staring out the window at some kids playing. Her mom told her to go out and play with those kids. So Katie went out. She could see that they were all having fun and she wanted to join in but she was afraid. She tried to muster up the courage to ask them if she could join them but she just couldn't do it.

She decided to go for a walk instead. She liked how peaceful the town was. The people seemed nice and polite. Her stroll finally led her to the town's lake. She felt the rush of cold air hitting her face. The beauty of the lake was something to behold. She sat there admiring it and decided that this would be her place. She would come here every day and maybe one day, she would bring her friends here.

After school, she always stopped by the lake before going home. She swore she could stay there for hours, maybe even live there. If she ever got hungry, she always had food ready in her bag.

One day when she was writing a poem about the lake, she heard her stomach growl. She put down her notebook and her pen and got her sandwich out. She was about to take a bite when she heard a noise. This alarmed her. She hadn't heard or seen anything strange before. She looked around and suddenly she noticed that there was something black moving toward the bank.

“A swimming black dog!” Katie cried out in surprise. First she felt a little frightened, because the dog was huge and wet. Then she tried to calm herself and guessed that “maybe it is just hungry.” So she offered her sandwich to the dog. After finishing its meal, the dog walked up to her and sat down beside her. She bravely reached out her hand to touch its head and introduced herself to it. The dog nodded as if to say “Nice to meet you, Katie.” From then on, Katie and the dog became friends.

“Animal Rescue Center. How can I help you?” a deep voice came through the phone receiver.

“I’d like to report a wounded animal,” I replied. I continued to explain approximately where I saw the animal. I was promised someone would go out that day to investigate what animal it was and remove the animal if needed.

Earlier that morning, I’d been on my way to meet a friend for breakfast. Driving down the road that connected two neighborhoods, there was nothing but tall trees and grassy areas on both sides of the road for a few miles. Then, I caught sight of a brown, black and white tail swaying (摇动) at the side of the road. Throughout breakfast, I couldn’t get the animal off my mind. I named him Furry. Perhaps it was someone’s loving cat or dog. Maybe a fox? I wasn’t sure.

After I called Animal Rescue Center, I decided to look on social media to see if anyone was missing a dog or cat in the surrounding neighborhoods where I had spotted Furry. There weren’t any listed missing pets that matched the description of what I saw, so I wrote a post describing Furry’s coloring and asked if anyone was missing a pet in that area By the end of the day, I didn’t get any replies to my post, so I came to the conclusion it must have been an animal in the wild.

The next morning, on my way to work driving on the same route I started singing along at the top of my lungs, until I saw Furry! There he was, far down the road, half behind some brush. Now, I was worried he would go onto the road. So I called Animal Rescue Center again, hoping they could catch and put him to safety or bring him to a wildlife center.
