When Mark was five years old, his parents separated and he stayed with his mother.

As Mark grew up he occasionally (偶尔地) thought of the brief time he shared with his father and longed to see him again one day. However, as he grew into his late teens, thoughts of his father began to fade away.

After he graduated from college, Mark got married and one year later, had a boy. The years passed.

One day when Mark’s son was five years old and as Mark was preparing to shave his face, his son looked up at him and laughed, “Daddy, you look like a clown (小丑) with that cream on your face.”

Mark laughed, looked into the mirror and realized how much his son looked like him at that age. Later, he remembered that his mother said he had told his own father the same thing.

This event started him thinking about his own father a lot and he began asking his mother. It had been a long time since Mark had spoken of his father and his mother told him that it was now over twenty years since she had spoken to him. In addition, all her knowledge of his father stopped when Mark became eighteen.

Mark looked deep into his mother’s eyes and said, “I need to find my father.” His mother then told him that his dad’s relatives had all passed away, and she had no idea where to begin searching for him but added, “Maybe, just maybe, if you contact the United States Embassy in England, they might be able to help you.”

Even though the chances seemed slim, Mark was determined. The very next day, he made an overseas call to the American Embassy.

“U.S. Embassy, how may we help you?”

“Ahh...hi, my name is Mark Sullivan and I am hoping to find my father.”

There was a long pause and the ruffing of some papers,’ and then the man said:

“Is this Mr. Mark Joseph Sullivan?”

“Yes,” Mark answered anxiously.

They checked the birth place and date.

He met her at a party. She was so outstanding, with many boys around her, while he was so ordinary, with nobody paying attention to him.

At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him. She was surprised, but out of politeness, she agreed.

They sat in a nice coffee shop. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable, thinking, “Please let me go home.”

Suddenly he asked the waiter, “Would you please give me some salt?” I’d like to put it in my coffee.”

Everybody stared at him. So strange! His face turned red, but, still, he put the salt in his coffee and drank it.

She asked him curiously, “Why do you have this hobby?”

He replied, “When I was a little boy, I was living near the sea. I liked playing in the sea, and I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood. I miss so much my hometown and my parents who are still living there.”

While saying that he couldn’t hold back his tears. She was deeply touched. That’s his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can speak out his homesickness must be a man who loves home , cares about home, and has responsibility for his family.

The she also started to speak about her faraway hometown, her childhood, and her family. That was a really ice tale, also a beautiful beginning of their story.

They continued to date. She found that actually he was man who met all her demands: he was kindhearted, warm and careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him!

Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story went on just like every beautiful love story: the princess married the prince, and then they were living in happiness… And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee.

I live on the west coast of Canada and my older son lives on its east coast. He has visited his mother and me a number of times and we have visited him there with some frequency. We also talk with each other using a computer communications programme. However, because of Covid-19 travel restrictions and the extremely long distance between us, we hadn’t seen him in person for more than two years. His mother is ill and can’t travel any more so we had talked about a possible future visit with him coming but nothing had been decided, or so I thought.

Then, one day, there was a knock on the door and when I opened it, my son walked in, carrying a pot of flowers. For a moment, I didn’t know who he was and then, suddenly, he was there. He hadn’t told us he was coming and seeing him was a shock and a wonderful surprise. It had been years since I last cried. But when he walked in, I was in tears.

I think that as parents, we tend to think of our children as being young and being in need of our help even when they have reached adulthood. We have two sons, both of them grown, and we love them both but they are still, to us, our kids. Somehow, though, the sudden appearance of my older son and his month-long visit that followed let me see him in a whole new light.

Todd was lying on the family room floor doing math homework, when he heard his mother, back from her shift at the Crafts Cottage. She was later than usual, so she must have stopped on the way home to get groceries after her work. Todd hoped so. Groceries were one of life’s good things. It was getting late, and Todd felt a bit hungry. As a matter of fact, he could hear his stomach growling. He only had some cereal for breakfast this morning. If only he could have a bite at his favorite food—the apple pie made by his mother! But it had been a while since she made desserts for them, for she had been much occupied recently.

His mother came into the family room and clicked off the TV. Todd looked at Amy, who was so lost in her book that she didn’t seem to notice their mother’s presence in the room. But their father, dozing (打瞌睡) on the couch with the remote in his hand, came awake with a guilty startle (惊吓).

“David, Todd, Amy.” Quiet voices could sound so much more threatening than shouting ones. “I need you to come into the kitchen. Now!”

Amy put her book down then, and the three of them dragged their feet into the kitchen. If they had tails, they would have been tucked (藏住) between their legs.

“Look at this place.” Todd’s mother said.

It was bad: newspapers in an untidy heap on the table, dirty dishes everywhere, an empty milk carton standing on the counter next to spilled cereal left over from breakfast, and two bags of groceries his mom had just carried in from the car.

“I want this cleaned up. I want these groceries put away. I want a decent meal represented on the table in sixty minutes. Call me when it’s ready. I’m going to be upstairs soaking in a hot tub.” Then she was gone.

Paragraph 1

Todd, Amy and their father quickly got down to work.
