Celebrating the Yorkshire Dialect (方言)

The Yorkshire Dialect Society (YDS) is kicking off a weekend of activities for Yorkshire Day in Keighley Library with what might be described as an important warm-up event and something unique and special about Yorkshire people — how they talk.

Keynote speakers will include Ian Stevenson on the story behind the Yorkshire dialect, such as the point from which it starts and its gradual development; Rod Dimbleby, Chairman of the YDS, on the 19th-century dialect poet and storyteller John Hartley; and Eric Scaife on readings and recitation s of dialect poems and prose (散文). There will also be an exhibition of books and booklets by the Keighley historian, writer and dialect poet, the late Ian Dewhirst.

The Schedule:
10:30   Registration and coffee.
11:00   The welcome speech by Rod Dimbleby.
11:10   The story behind the Yorkshire dialect by Ian Stevenson.
12:15   The lunch break. You may bring sandwiches or go to local cafes in Keighley. During the lunch break, there will be time to see the exhibition in the library to remember Ian Dewhirst who sadly died in 2019.
13:30   A talk on John Hartley’s Clock Almanack, a gold mine of the Yorkshire dialect, by Rod Dimbleby.
14:30-14:45   The tea break.
14:45   “Tyke Talk”——a celebration of the Yorkshire dialect through humorous poems and amusing stories—by Eric Scaife.
16:00   Questions and discussion about the future of the Yorkshire dialect.
16:30   Close.

The admission price is £5 for members and £8 for non-members, both of which include the morning coffee and afternoon tea.

Island Lobster (龙虾) Company Open

Owners Katie and Thom Werner opened Island Lobster Company earlier this week. It’s located on Peaks Island in the space formerly occupied by Peaks Island House.

The 64-seat establishment is a trap-to-table restaurant. The Werners are serving lobsters that they’re trapped and hauled in with their own boat. You can see a copy of their menu on their website.


Coals Pizza Opens Today

Coals Pizza is scheduled to open today at 5 pm. Coals is located at 114 Preble Street in the former Portland & Rochester space. This is Coals’ only location outside of New York. They specialize in grilled pizza. You can see their full menu online.


Luke’s Lobster

The seafood spot, which will soft open for dinner on Wednesday, is a major milestone for the lobster company that first launched in Manhattan in 2009. Started by Cape Elizabeth native Luke Holden, Luke’s Lobster debuted in New York City’s East Village, and went on to make its mark in 10 cities across the U.S.— plus Japan and China.


Under Construction: Twist

A new food truck called Twist is under development Twist is a collaboration between Melissa Lombardi, a former manager at Woodford F&B and Dan Zarin, the longtime writer of the Breakfast Serial column. Twist will be serving customized ice cream and shakes made to order.

Running alongside the 2020 National Poetry Competition, the Poetry Society has presented a series of writing guides by previous winners. You can select from a guide by Ella Frears on poems that explore the unknown, a guide by Pascale Petit, focusing on nature writing, a guide by Eric Berlin looking at poems where the speakers' viewpoints take sudden turns, and a guide by Matthew Caley on poems that use lightness to great effect.
