Tang Jialu, 75, who has restored dozens of ancient Chinese inventions, is now trying 【小题1】 (inspire) the interest of young people by offering them hands-on experience with the devices.

Tang Jialu 【小题2】 (study) ancient Chinese science and technology for 40 years. In March, 2021, he set up a research center in Chongqing for students to learn how to reproduce Chinese scientific and technological devices.

“Studying here is much more fun and meaningful 【小题3】 playing with toys”, said a student. “It improves my hands-on skills and gives me an introduction to ancient knowledge.” Some 20,000 students and their parents had visited the center by February, including 100 university students 【小题4】(major) in civil engineering.

In addition to studying traditional Chinese science and technology, Tang has come up with designs for about 1,000 souvenirs and handicrafts over the years, most of 【小题5】 are in commercial production.

“The Qin Dynasty, 【小题6】(establish) by Emperor Qin Shi Huang, lasted for only 15 years, while the Han Dynasty, which attached great 【小题7】 (important) to science and technology, lasted for over 400 years. That means science and technology might play 【小题8】 important role in the stability of society and economic development,” he said.

“Culture is the soul of a nation. We need to draw strength 【小题9】traditional things,” Tang said. “My hope is that this will give young people a better understanding of our long history, encourage them to contribute to Chinese civilization and strengthen their 【小题10】 (culture) confidence.”

Walking into Wei Lamei's home in Xi'an, one can hardly imagine that the room belongs to a 74-year-old granny, with all kinds of dolls 【小题1】(fill) every corner. She 【小题2】(make) at least 700 large cartoon dolls and countless small ones over the past 26 years.

Wei developed a【小题3】 (fascinate) for making dolls at the age of eight 【小题4】she saw a Russian girl with a blond doll in her arms."After retirement, I began to think about following my childhood dream," said Wei.

In 2010, she returned to Xi'an and turned her home into a workshop.She has ten pairs of glasses and keeps them in different places in the house,so she can browse fashion applications on her smartphone anytime. At 【小题8】same time, she often draws inspiration from Xi'an, the ancient city with a long history, and adds traditional cultural elements to her works. She also 【小题9】(active) participates in live-streaming activities, sharing her daily work and attracting many young fans.

There is no certain way to live our lives. The most important thing is 【小题10】we can do what we love.

Facing the Future

As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee【小题1】they will become reality. In this respect, some people are【小题2】(fortunate) than others, as can be illustrated by comparing the lives of two famous authors.

The American author, Ernest Hemingway, born in 1899, was from early boyhood single-minded in his 【小题3】 (ambitious) to write. On leaving high school, he joined a local Kansas newspaper as a trainee reporter. In his words, “I decided that I would write one story about each thing that I knew about.”【小题4】(set) himself this goal, he wrote novels and short stories based on his personal experiences. His short novel The Old Man and the Sea【小题5】(win) the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953.

By contrast, the young Arthur Conan Doyle, born in Scotland in 1859, had【小题6】(original) worked as a doctor. After Sherlock Holmes made him famous, Doyle gave up medicine and devoted himself entirely【小题7】writing. He still wanted to become known for his historical novels amongst other academic works. So he killed off the famous detective in a novel【小题8】(publish) in 1893. However, fans of Holmes were so angry that Doyle, under immense pressure, was forced【小题9】(bring) Holmes back from the dead.

Though both of these men were successful at last, their paths to success were very different. So,【小题10】twists and turns you might encounter, take a leaf out of the books of these two authors and be prepared for the unexpected.
