Museums can be overwhelming. With thousands of pieces there, how do you know which to focus on? And once you see a piece you like, how do you interact with it? Here is some advice on how to have a meaningful connection when you look at art.
Get up close and personal.
Stand back. Next, take a few steps back, stand in the center — and observe what’s happening in the big picture. What’s going on in the piece?
Look at it from an angle. Then try looking at an artwork from its sides, because you might catch something you might not have seen straight on. If it’s something like The Ambassadors by Holbein at The National Gallery in London, and if you stand to the side, you’ll see something that from front on looks very different.
Move your body. If you’re looking at a painting, you can take a finger to the air and trace the outline of the figure or the movement of the brushstrokes.
Consider the subject of the art. That can have a profound effect on how you feel about the work and perhaps you can learn something from it. Take the example of Andrew Wyeth’s famous painting, Christina’s World, which depicts (描绘) a girl with a muscle disease crawling across a field to get to her home in the distance. The painting personifies (体现) determination.

An artistic student from a school near Rochester, New York decided to get down to a photography project of a different kind.
Each day, Chaz Rorick from Rush-Henrietta High School decided to upload an Instagram photo of himself imitating(模仿) a US president alongside a photo of the actual president.
Many would agree the impressions are quite familiar.
Rorick’s project started when he realized the set of clothes he wore looked like that of President Harry Truman while watching a documentary. He took a photo of himself, placed it next to one of Truman, and posted it on Instagram.
He had an instant fan: his father. “The next day I did Roosevelt for fun, but by the third picture I did one a day, no matter how busy I was. My friends enthusiastically encouraged me to carry on with such strange and unusual things,” the high school junior told Mashable.
According to Rochester Homepage.net, Rorick said of his project, “It was not too much work, maybe half an hour a night doing it, except for the ones with wigs(假发) and mustaches. I cut out paper for it. I taped cotton to my head.”
“It was fun though,” he added. “All my friends supported it. My parents supported it. History teachers are crazy about it.”
Some people hold the view that Rorick’s photos are creative, entertaining and educational. However, others think everyone can dress up, too, but they have to admit that with all the things out there that Rorick could do in his spare time, there’ s nothing wrong with this.

Some of the world’s finest
Stained glass(彩色玻璃) artwork
Sainte Chappelle, France
While many say that Paris’ must-see cathedral(教堂) is Notre Dame de Paris, Sainte Chapelle should also be high up on the list. Louis IX ordered it to be built in 1239 to house the Crown of Thorns, a famous relic from Constantinople. Within the ceilings of the church are fifteen of the world’s finest stained glass windows. Unfortunately, as a result of the French Revolution, one third of the stained glass had to be replaced.
The Chicago Cultural Center, USA
While the Windy City might not house the nation’s winningest sports teams, it does have one of the world’s most eye-catching displays of stained galss. Today’s Chicago Cultural Center, which was designed as a library in 1887, has a 38-feet-tall Tiffany glass dome(圆屋顶), which is said to be the largest Tiffany dome in the world.
Erawan Museum, Thailand
The Erawan Museum, built in 1994, houses ancient, priceless Thai artworks, all of which are displayed within the building’s three floors, said to symbolize the three levels of the universe. The shiny stained glass is on the second floor, which museum owner Khun Lek Viriyapant considers to be the human level. Designed by German artist Jacob Schwarzkopf, the stained glass artwork shows five continents, with the sun delivering light, and therefore life, into all.
Saint Vitus Cathedral, Czech Republic
While the Czech church whose doors many travelers pass through every day was built way back in 1344, its amazing display of stained glass is a 20th-century donation from well-known Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. The artwork is nothing if not fitting for Prague, the city in which the stained glass is displayed. After all, it is the modern-day Czech Republic from which dreamy Bohemians came.

Buying folk art paintings has been a passion of mine. I found some pieces recently. The problem was that I could only afford one and I was having trouble in deciding which one to buy.
The first painting was a work of Bill Dodge. He created it in 1962 and named it First Trolley to Van Nuys. The painting shows the center of a town, with a lot of people in the windows and on the street.
Thomas Chambers is one of America’s most famous folk artists. The painting of him shows a fishing scene with villagers and boats. It may have great value in the future. But it doesn’t suit my taste.
Alligator Fisher is a folk art painting created in 1940.The blue of the bayou(海湾) is very calming and the trees give it a very Southern feel. There is a house in the painting and I like this one very much. It reminds me of Louisiana, where I was born.
A Letter from My Mother is one that I found during a journey. The look on the girl’s face is so serious and sad. The painting itself is great; it just makes me feel sad. I had no idea where this folk art painting should hang.
At last, I decided to buy the one that can give me a good mood every day. What is more important than a good mood?
