The Space-Time Painter, written by Chinese writer Hai Ya, won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette at the 81st World Science Fiction Convention【小题1】(hold)in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu.

Hai became the third Chinese【小题2】(win)of the Hugo Award, following sci-fi writers Liu Cixin and Hao Jingfang. The Space-Time Painter was published in 2022. It 【小题3】(inspire)by the life experience of the【小题4】(talent)Chinese painter Wang Ximeng during the Northern Song period(960-1127), who created the 12-meter-long landscape painting “One Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.”

In this story, Hai did his best to balance the relationship between story, characters and history,【小题5】(hope) to bring readers a mature work. He said that 【小题6】it was not a big category, historical sci-fi has always been there.

Hai, also a financial worker, thinks himself more【小题7】 a sci-fi enthusiast than a writer. “I write while doing my job, so I have very little time to write every day,” he said. “But I think as long as I love it and am willing to put efforts in it, I will see hopes and【小题8】dawn.”

The Hugo Awards are the most prestigious awards of science fictions. It was first presented in 1953 and presented【小题9】(annual)since 1955. The Hugo Awards are voted on by members of the World Science Fiction Convention,【小题10】is also responsible for administering them.

As Dr. Lin Qiaozhi said, “To a person nothing is 【小题1】 (precious) than their life...” These words of her give us a look into the heart of this amazing woman, and 【小题2】 carried her through a life of hard choices.

At age 18, she chose to study medicine instead of following the traditional path of 【小题3】 (marry) like the majority of girls. At age 26, she 【小题4】 (hire) as a resident physician in the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital 【小题5】 (immediate) after she graduated. Within six months, she was assigned to 【小题6】 honorable position that usually took four years to achieve. After working for a few years, she was sent to study abroad, where she turned 【小题7】 the offer from her foreign colleagues. She wanted to serve the women and children at home.

In 1941, she became the first Chinese woman to be appointed as director of the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital, 【小题8】 was later closed because of the war. So she opened a private clinic to help the people in need and charged very low【小题9】 (fee) and often reduced costs for poor patients.

The new People’s Republic of China saw Dr. Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role. Though Lin Qiaozhi never married, she was known as the “mother of ten thousand babies”, 【小题10】 (deliver) over 50,000 babies in her lifetime.

At the Nobel Prize Lecture on 7 December,2015,【小题1】84-year-old Chinese woman walked slowly on to the stage. The woman was Tu Youyou, the first Chinese female scientist to be awarded a Nobel Prize for her work. When thanking the Committee for the honour, Tu Youyou said, “This is not only an honour for myself, but also 【小题2】(recognise) of and encouragement for all scientists in China.”

In 1969, Tu Youyou 【小题3】(choose) to establish a team to find a cure 【小题4】malaria, a deadly disease at that time. Across the world, scientists tested more than 240,000 chemicals with no success. However, Tu Youyou had an idea that Chinese herbs might hold the secret. She and her team began using modern research methods【小题5】(study) these Chinese herbs one by one. After hundreds of 【小题6】(fail) experiments, they eventually came across a 【小题7】(promise) chemical. The medicine they discovered, artemisinin, has now become the world’s 【小题8】(effective) drug for fighting malaria.

Even though Tu Youyou is not interested in fame, she has become a scientist 【小题9】work is internationally renowned. In 2019, she was selected by the BBC as one of the most influential 【小题10】(figure) of science in the 20th century along with Albert Einstein and Alan Mathison Turing.
