Today, many people are worried about endangered species. But isn’t it just normal for some animals to die out?

In the past, animals died out over a long period of time. When animals died out in the past, it was usually because of the weather or other natural 【小题1】 (cause).

What is happening today is 【小题2】 (total) different. We are killing millions of species in a short time. The result is that we are killing our future, because so many species 【小题3】 (kill) over the past few decades that even 【小题4】 fittest can’t survive. In fact, there won’t be enough species to choose from. 【小题5】 enough animals and plants, evolution cannot function. Nature will get 【小题6】 (bad) instead of better.

Many of the species 【小题7】 (disappear) on earth are unknown and few people even know that they are dying out. These animals started to live on earth long before us, 【小题8】 we have no right to kill. We may also need these species in the future. We must try to keep the endangered species alive. If we allow these species 【小题9】 (die) out, we are in fact becoming endangered 【小题10】 (we).

Among the capitals of big economies, Beijing enjoys a surprising distinction. 【小题1】 its sometimes unpleasant weather, it hosts more species of birds than any other such city apart from Brasilia. Remarkably, however, birdwatching remains 【小题2】 (common).

In many countries, birders play an important role in 【小题3】 (spot) changes in bird populations and behaviour. A British enthusiast in Beijing Terry Townshend, has recently set up 【小题4】 means of doing so without needing to stand for hours outdoors. It involves a digital listening device 【小题5】 (fix) on the roof of a 15-storey building in northern Beijing. For several months until mid-November it recorded the night-time calls of migratory birds flying above. The sounds will be used to identify night-lying species, some of 【小题6】 are not commonly seen overhead by day. The technique has been used in America and Europe, but Mr Townshend thinks this is its first known 【小题7】 (apply) in Asia. Such devotion is rare among 【小题8】 (amateur).

China has little history of birdwatching. Only in the 19th century did the scientific study of birds begin. Birdwatching as a pastime 【小题9】 (emerge) only in the past two decades, helped by rising incomes that have allowed people to buy binoculars and cameras. There is a small but growing number of local birders who 【小题10】 (close) monitor bird migration and draw public attention to human threats to birds.

Fabien Cousteau was born with deep love for the ocean. His grandfather and his father were ocean 【小题1】 (explore) and documentary filmmakers. Today, Fabien 【小题2】 (follow) his family's footstep, trying to protect the planet's endangered ocean life and to reach【小题3】 balance between environmental problems and market economies.

Fabien is well known for his study of sharks. In 2001, he created a TV special based on the shark attacks that 【小题4】 (occur) along the New Jersey shoreline in 1916. In 2010, Fabien and his team spent 31 days underwater 【小题8】 (discover) the climate change and pollution which are affecting the oceans.

Fabien is 【小题9】 (current) working on a documentary film about The Adventures of Mission 31, as well as 【小题10】 (build) an Ocean Learning Center to provide children with the opportunity to learn about oceans.
