It seemed like it had only been a few years ago that Indigo, our black Lab (拉布拉多寻回犬), had first rushed through our door. While time raced by, our children grew up and went off to university. The mirror, which had reflected a young mum when Indigo first arrived, now showed a woman in late middle age. We all turned grey: me, my husband, the dog. In August 2017, I took Indigo for one last walk. She was slow and shaky on her paws. She died that month, a tennis ball by her side. Not long after, I got a call from our dog daycare. One of their customers was dying, and her dog, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they asked, might our family be interested in adopting her? I told them I’d owned a succession of dogs since 1964, each one of them a witness to a particular phase of my life. But with the loss of Indigo, all that was over. The days of my dogs, I now understood, were done at last.

Then one morning, as I was passing the dog daycare, I changed my mind. What harm could Chloe do? She spent hours that first day going to every corner, sniffing things out. Finally she sat down by the fireplace and gave me a look as if to say if you wanted, I would stay with you.

Everything I know about love I’ve learned from dogs. But everything I know about loss I’ve learned from them, too. They fill our hearts. And then, in what seems like no time at all, they’re gone.

Yesterday,I drove my 23-year-old daughter to the nearby counseling center,to attempt once again to complete the treatment. I did my best to encourage and give her inspiring support as she was feeling anxious of the whole process.

While we were waiting, just minutes before the center opened their door,a young girl the same age as my daughter, came in. She had a beautiful smile I remember, and spoke of her desire to make a difference for others like my daughter from a11 she learned through her past drug abuse. I felt that she was sincere in her desire. It had been two weeks since her stopping the use of drugs.

My daughter was standing next to me and focused on doing her best to stay calm on the outside, while inside she was feeling quite anxious,so she barely noticed what this girl was saying. Yet,she did manage to open up and talk with her a bit about the noisy ceiling fan in the hall where we were waiting.

Next Friday,it will be a new opportunity for my daughter to try once again,as well as the   possibility of being there for this young girl, too. I continue the example of sell-love for my daughter, strengthening this skill, while encouraging my daughter’s positive changes.

I noticed yesterday,my daughter called her friends,“I am a strong woman!”This made me smile,as a sudden gift to me from when I had been speaking to her enthusiastically about how we are strong women, trying our best, and we overcome and win through our life challenges. Let her know I believe in her. While she was focused on the physical,in that moment,I think she was likely feeling strength in all ways, too. I hope so.

My wife and I usually don’t keep houseplants. But after I was told I had cancer I wanted to be around some life. When my friend Mitch gave me a lucky bamboo plant in a bowl, we decided to place the plant next to the living room window across from the couch.

I told Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or brown or lose all of its leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of achievement at a time when I sometimes felt useless. As a doctor, I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it. Watering the plant taught me I couldstill be a caregiver.

Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed the first round of chemotherapy(化疗). Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and lush Both the tree and I were healthy.

Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of stress. No matter what I did, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy.

“I can’t even care for a simple plant!” I yelled. “I’m failing!“ I couldn’t shake the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my own health. I realized I had wrongly connected my careful caring for the plant-something over which I had at least some control-with my own survival something over which I had no control.

When my tumor(肿瘤) returned, it would not be because of any failure on my part. As my anxiety decreased, I began to research how to heal the plant. After moving it under a sunny window, we both began to thrive again.

Whenever I look at the tree in its new pot, I think of Mitch and all the people who supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will comfort Hannah and remind her that our large community will continue to care for her after I am gone.

A GIF of the Wicked Witch (巫婆) of the West from “The Wizard of Oz” saying “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!” played behind Economics Professor Michael Rizzo as students gathered in Wegmans Hall on Oct. 30 to hear him argue against the opinion that the Earth is going through a climate disaster.

“I’m curious to see how many people will misunderstand the point of my talk, which is about addressing the issue of disaster and not at all the issue of whether climate change is happening, or even the mechanics of it,” he said in an interview with the Cambus Times.

The talk included Rizzo stating his biggest fear—that he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know about climate change. The talk, he said, was assembled from everything he’s read, and, to him, things don’t look so bad, but he knows he hasn’t read everything.

First-year Aidan Lieberman, who attended the talk after hearing about it in Rizzo’s Prin- ciples of Economics class, thought the professor tried to fit too much into his time, but he agreed with the points that he could follow, saying “they seemed to make sense.”

“I was only able to follow a few of the points he was making, ” Lieberman said. “My biggest takeaway is that humans will be able to manage the effects of climate change as they become more severe. ”

Rizzo said he wanted students to leave the talk understanding that the rhetoric around climate “disaster” often comes more from how information is reported rather than the science it- self. Addressing issues of climate change, he stressed, requires a careful understanding that takes lots of research to achieve-research that he found students weren’t doing before coming to him with disagreements.
