Coming of age is that time in each of our lives when we begin to see the possibilities. The world opens up in ways that mature our vision and give us a sense of responsibility and gratefulness. Connor had just started college and loved being at that stage in his life where he could eat all the pizza he wanted, yet engage in adult conversations with his parents about the responsibility to make life better for others. Connor’s optimism was infectious. There was so much he could do, and so much he could become.

But it all ended one night when Connor was distracted while driving on a Colorado high-way. A young man, who gave off so much light, suddenly went dark.

Connor’s father, David, took it particularly hard. A father sees more than his own traits (性格) in his son; he sees greater possibilities than he achieved. Taking that hope away left David feeling at a loss. But Connor’s optimism was one of those traits passed on to him by his father. So, David got to work.

First, he established the Honor Connor Scholarship Fund to reward students who served in the community. Next, he went to work creating a research-based curriculum that educates University of Colorado Boulder students and their families about the dangers of texting while driving. It includes a very simple three-part promise: Do not text or use social media while driving, speak out if riding with a driver who is distracted and encourage friends and family to drive phone-free.

David now works with lecturers at various colleges and high schools, ensuring young minds understand how statistically at risk they are when they text while driving. He’s become a passionate advocate for preparing young people to drive safely and not reach for their phones while they’re at the wheel. “I just don’t want other parents to go through what I did when I lost Connor,” says David. “It’s just so preventable.”

Kate Hanselman’s home is a shrine to hobbies past and present. Fencing suit sits beside multiple pairs of rock-climbing shoes. “I find yarn everywhere because I love knitting, and I have a whole set of embroidery (刺绣) stuff,” she says. Plus: stacks of puzzles, her partner’s golf clubs, and equipment from his flying lessons. “Our house is like a full hobby station,” she says with a laugh.

Challenging, fun and engaging hobbies have the power to make us happier and healthier, says Hanselman, a nurse with the counseling practice Thriveworks. Such pursuits help us grow in creative, physical and intellectual ways, and can boost self-esteem. Plus, they often foster connection with others. Hobbies lead to better physical health, more sleep, lower stress, greater life satisfaction, a larger social network and improved work performance.

“Hobbies live in the pleasure world, not necessarily the mastery world,” Hanselman says. “We’re not trying to impress the board; we’re not going for a paycheck; there’s no additional motive. Hobbies are like dessert and as a baker myself, dessert is the most important part.”

That resonates with Chris Johnson, recreational woodworker, motorcyclist, gardener, cook and runner. He has accepted that he’ll never be a master surfer, but that doesn’t dampen his enjoyment of riding waves. And he’s so taken with beekeeping that his backyard is now home to 20,000 honeybees.

“I really love learning and figuring things out, and developing an understanding of how things tick,” says Johnson, of Carolina Beach, North Carolina. His hobbies tend to evolve out of curiosity, boredom or need. Take the bees: After moving into a new home with a barren yard, he was concerned about a lack of pollinators, so he planted a garden and became a beekeeper.

“If you derive joy from your hobby—it doesn’t matter if it’s a board game or beekeeping—I’m confident it will make you a better person in every aspect of your life,” he says.

Qian Xuesen is a world-famous expert on aerospace rockets and aerodynamics(空气动力学). He obtained great achievements in areas of applied mechanics, engineering cybernetics(控制论)and system engineering and made distinguished contributions to the foundation and development of Chinese aerospace industry.

After graduating from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1934, Qian Xuesen went to America to study in MIT one year later. After receiving master's degree there, he went to study in California Institute of Technology and received PhD degrees in both aerospace and mathematics.

In 1955, Qian Xuesen returned to his motherland despite all the barriers. His return brought China the hope of developing space science and its own missiles(导弹).

In 1956, he put forward "Proposal on the Development of China's Aviation(航空)Industry for National Defense". With the support from the Premier Zhou Enlai, Qian Xuesen began to prepare for the establishment of China's first missile and rocket research and development structure, the Fifth Research Institute of State Ministry of Defense. From then on, he has long been in charge of the chief technological research and development of China's missile, rocket and spacecraft.

China successfully exploded its first atom bomb in 1964. Later, China launched its first man-made satellite to the earth orbit on April 24, 1970, becoming the fifth country to independently launch satellite following the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the USA, France and Japan. The satellite floated around the earth, broadcasting the song Dong Fang Hong, which has the same name as the satellite.

As a forerunner of China's aerospace science and technology, he provided chances for young scientists. Wang Yongzhi, former chief designer of China's manned-space project, has benefited a lot from Qian. "He suggested that rocket of the second generation should be developed by our second generation scientists. This gave us chances to be general designers". Recalling the experience working with Qian, Sun Jiadong, general designer of China's lunar orbiter project, is grateful. "He put great expectation on us and trusted us a lot. Whenever we made mistakes, he seldom blamed us but helped find out the reason so we could avoid it in the future."

Honored as Father of Missile and King of Rockets, Qian never stopped his work on scientific research after retirement. He said he had no time to review the past, but looked forward to the future.
