Last year,Karen Wooldridge and his friend Laura Hogan had an idea: Take unsold flowers which will be thrown away and send them to old people.“We started working on our kitchen island, and we were really proud of sending flowers,“Wooldridge said. Soon, Hogan added,“We developed.”

Now, they send a thousand unsold bunches of flowers a month, with 150 volunteers working five days a week. Their organization,Bluebirds &. Blooms,is named after their childhood youth troupe(剧团)The Bluebirds.Their flowers brighten 30 communities—mostly homes for seniors who are losing their memories.

Vellie Larson has lost some of her memories, but her daughter Karen Schwartz was in the same Bluebirds troupe as Wooldridge and Hogan, and Larson taught them all music.“When they send flowers to her,”Schwartz said,“She’ll describe them to me and give me a flower report every day.”

“The flowers are also a hint that someone cares,”said Shery Hassan, the center’s director.“They’re sad, and just having such a simple thing as a bunch of flowers brightens their days,”Hassan said.“Families will come in, and they’ll say,’Oh who got you flowers? This is beautiful.’And it says’Thinking of you.’The seniors can just say,’Oh,somebody was thinking of me!’”

For Wooldridge, the act of kindness brings back great memories of her father, who had Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆).“I know he would have loved visits from these women,”Wooldridge said. And while some might find it difficult to work so closely with those fighting with memory loss, Hogan said,“It makes us happy. We’re doing something good.”

My aunt Nancy is a truck driver. When she left school, she didn't know what she wanted to do, so she went to work in a supermarket. One day, she was talking to one of the truck drivers at the supermarket, and she got the idea to drive a truck herself. She went home and told her parents (my grandparents!), and they thought it was a good idea.

Nancy’s journeys are different every day, and she goes to every part of the country. She enjoys the driving, but she says that one day, she would like to get a job with a different company(公司) so that she can drive to more places.

Nancy says she likes being out on the road, seeing new towns all the time, but the best thing about driving trucks for her is talking to everyone she sees during her working day. She also says the trucks are comfortable, so she doesn't mind sleeping in them. For her, they are her home on wheels!

I asked my grandparents what they thought about Nancy’s job. They are happy that Nancy is happy, so they don't want her to change jobs. But they worry about her because it’s sometimes a dangerous job and she spends a lot of time away from home.

When Dr. Kwane Stewart, a veterinarian(兽医), spots a homeless person with a dog while he' s driving to work, he doesn't look away uncomfortably and step on the gas.

Instead, he pulls over, grabs his bag stocked with medical supplies, and asks the person, “Is there anything your pet can use?”

For nearly a decade, Stewart has volunteered to help pets of the homeless in California. Stewart never expected this to become his life' s calling. It goes back to the Great Recession, when he was working as a veterinarian at an animal shelter and was astonished by the number of stray animals (流浪动物)who needed help.

Sometimes when he offers to help a pet, he's turned down by homeless people who suspect his motives. But when they do accept his help, everything changes.

Stewart remembered an experience with a man named Mike and his dog who was going blind. Mike had cancer but said to Stewart, “I would much sooner have you help her if you could than be cured of my cancer. "Stewart relieved the dog's painful condition with treatments, for which the man was extremely grateful.

While he's heard comments that homeless people shouldn't have pets, Stewart doesn't share that opinion because he's seen the benefits both to people and the animals themselves. “They offer hope to each other and that is the power of pet companionship,” he said.

Stewart hopes to challenge prejudice (偏见)against homeless people through a TV show, in which he stars, called “The Street Vet”.

Out on the streets, the most common illnesses Stewart sees are infections. In the past, he would pay for it out of his own pocket. Still, costs add up, so he started crowdfunding (众筹) last fall. Inspired by his efforts, the fundraising site GoFundMe named him the February GoFundMe Hero.

Stewart has no intention (打算) of slowing down. “I don't plan on stopping anytime as long as I have the strength to do it, ” he said.

【小题1】How does Stewart react to the homeless person mentioned in paragraph 1?

A.It limits animals' freedom.
B.It requires much time and effort.

D.It should be banned among homeless people.
【小题4】What will Stewart do in the future?
A.Work for GoFundMe.B.Star in“The Street Vet”。

I’m a student with different interests. I play football for Whitburn AFC at under 19 level, where I play as a right midfielder which I enjoy very much. I like talking with many different kinds of friends. The cinema is a place where I go as often as I can, as I am a huge movie lover. I like both action and other kinds of films.

The thing I would say I do the most is listening to music. I like rock music. However, my CD collection includes a wide selection of music. With my interest in music I go to see my favourite bands when they come on tour.

The Internet and computers are something I usually do with when I’m free, but I would not say it’s my main interest in life. Travelling to many different countries is a great experience. I have been to Spain, Belgium, Holland, France and even England. I went to a little town in Spain last year just outside Barcelona. Anybody there hardly speaks English. However, I found that I can communicate with these people who speak a different language from me and I am still able to understand. Meeting people from abroad is very interesting.

Do you like making friends with me?
