The 60-foot-tall rocket took off in West Texas, sending a group of six people into space and giving them a few minutes of weightlessness before they landed by parachute (降落伞).

Most of the passengers paid a secret sum of money for their seats. But Katya Echazarreta, an engineer and science communicator, was selected by a nonprofit organization to join this travel from a pool of thousands of applicants (申请⼈). The organization’s goal is to send great leaders into space and allow them to experience the overview effect, which was reported by astronauts who say that viewing the Earth from space gives them a great change in their view.

“Looking down, you see everyone is down there, all of our past, all of our difficulties, everything — everything is there,” Echazarreta said. “When I came back down, it just completely strengthened my wish to continue enabling people of different backgrounds to go into space and do whatever they want to do.”

Echazarreta is the first Mexican-born woman to travel into space. She moved to the United States with her family at the age of seven. She recalled (回忆说) that she felt uncertain in a new place where she didn’t speak the language and that a teacher warned her she might have to repeat a grade. “It just really fueled me and after that, I just studied harder,” Echazarreta said. Later she was the main breadwinner in her family. She had sometimes up to four jobs at the same time, just to try to successfully graduate from college.

She worked in NASA before and didn’t see other female engineers like her, which inspired her to popularize science among the public. These days, Echazarreta is studying for her master’s degree in engineering at Johns Hopkins University. She also has a following of more than 330,000 fans on TikTok, and hosts a science-focused YouTube series.

The sun was rising when Daryl’s delivery truck with goods reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before midnight.

Then he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. He stopped and found the lump was a girl. He tried shaking her awake but she couldn’t move, so he carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn’t be run over there. Now she was someone else’s problem because he didn’t have time to be a hero. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl still lying by the side of the road, he knew he couldn’t leave her alone. So Daryl put her into his truck and drove to the next town.

An hour later he arrived at the police station. After explaining what had happened, he prepared to leave, but the policeman said he needed to make a report. Daryl knew it was impossible for him to get to Los Angeles on time now.

Three hours later the report was done and the girl had recovered somewhat. She explained that she had fallen on the highway, weak from hunger. She also thanked Daryl for saving her life. Daryl told her that he had been happy to help, but as he left the police station he knew his boss wouldn’t be happy.

Just as he was about to start the car, his mother called. “Have you seen?” she said. “A bridge collapsed two hours ago, the one that you drive over on the way to Los Angeles.”

Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she’s been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.

The traveler, who was born with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated(截肢) at the age of four. Although the amputation caused setbacks for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as inspiration for living her best life. To spread that message, Gallagher has taken to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the globe, but instead of using geo-tag (地理位置标签), she writes her location across her artificial leg before taking a picture.

Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam, Holland, relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, Spain, posing with a waffle (华夫饼) in Brussels, Belgium, taking in the impressive Parthenon temple in Athens, Greece, and enjoying a river cruise in Budapest, Hungary, all with the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.

“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalk-board,” Gallagher said. “My mum and grandmother weren’t too keen on the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did.”

“When I’m writing on my leg, people often stare, looking puzzled, but once I share the photos, I receive only positive feedback. Seeing this, I feel much fired up and decide to try more. My leg hasn’t stopped me from doing anything I’ve wanted to do. I don’t know if it’s my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, but regardless, I’ve been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life,” said Gallagher.

Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. And if life gives you an artificial leg, make art.
