Zlateh the Goat

This winter, for Reuven, it was a bad one, and after long hesitation he decided to sell Zlateh, the goat. She was old and gave little milk. Reuven told his boy Aaron to take the goat to the butcher in town.

Aaron understood what it meant, but he had to obey his father. Leah, his mother, wiped the tears from her eyes. Aaron put on thick clothes, and took along two slices of bread with cheese to eat on the road.

While the family said good-bye to the goat, Zlateh licked Reuven’s hand and she shook her small white beard. The sun was shining when Aaron left the village. Suddenly the weather changed. In his twelve years Aaron had never experienced a snow like this. His hands were numb, and he could no longer feel his toes.

Suddenly he found a haystack (干草堆) and dragged Zlateh after him. When he reached the hay, he made out a nest for himself and the goat. The moment she smelt the hay, she began to eat. Outside, the snow continued to fall. Aaron ate his two slices of bread and cheese. Then he milked her. The milk was rich and sweet.

The outside was still completely dark. He began to talk to Zlateh. “If the snow keeps on falling like this, we may have to stay here for days,” Aaron explained.

“Maaaa,” Zlateh bleated.

Aaron said patiently. “I need you and you need me. Isn’t that right?”

“Maaaa.”

For three days Aaron and Zlateh stayed in the haystack. Aaron had always loved Zlateh, but in these three days he loved her more and more. She fed him with her milk and helped him keep warm.

On the morning of the fourth day Aaron heard the ringing of sleigh (雪橇) bells. The peasant who drove the sleigh pointed out the way to him — not to the butcher, but home to the village. Aaron had decided in the haystack that he would never part with Zlateh.

读后续写

We have a pit bull (比特犬). We found him a few weeks ago, walking along the road in a rural area. He jumping on cars, we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere nearby, so we passed him by. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again, trying to get folks to stop for him. When he saw us, he laid down in the middle of the road, so we were unable to get around him.

We stopped the car and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out if anyone was around from whom he was separated. It didn’t appear so. Then, we took a good look at the dog. He had no collar and he was really thin. We decided he was abandoned.

My husband said, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all. The only thing we were in danger of was getting licked to death. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanking us for picking him up.

The dog was clearly on the road for some time. He was extremely under weight. He was covered in scars and new wounds. We have guessed that some of the scars were from when he was on the road. We thought of possible fights with coyotes, but he also looked as though he was used to fighting other dogs. We figured his incredibly sweet personality was the reason he was abandoned. He can’t have been a good fighting dog.

Therefore, we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks and he gained over twenty pounds.

Mia woke up. She opened her eyes and had a quick look at the photos of her and her friends. It was her first morning waking up in her new house after moving.

She moved here yesterday. She left everything and everyone behind, including her friends. She was all alone, only her and her parents, and being an only child, Mia did not have much company since they moved. She knew no one. It was her first day of school. She hoped she would make new friends and wouldn’t be as lonely.

After eating breakfast, Mia felt ready to go. Her mom waited for her in the car. As she walked over, she spotted a little dog. It was all wet and shaking. She felt so sorry for it. Suddenly, she got a strong idea that she wanted to keep it! Despite knowing her mom was never going to let her, she carried the dog and ran to her room quickly.

Her mom assumed she had just forgotten something in her room. Mia did not know what to do with the dog and where to put it. She just found a box lying around and thought it would be a good idea to put the dog inside. Then she got a random (随意的) notebook and ran out as is she forgot that.

The school was normal, nothing very special. Mia missed her friends. She got back from school, and her mom talked to her with lots of questions about how her day was. Expecting to see the dog, Mia answered her mom casually (漫不经心地). Mom thought Mia was tired after the first day ,so she stopped chatting and went cooking.

Mia hurriedly grabbed (抓) some ham for the dog. It finished almost immediately. She named the dog Jasper, Mia thought she had to tell her mom the truth, but she did not know how. She was fearful that Mom may get mad, so she wrote a letter explaining why she wanted to keep Jasper.

“Dinner’s ready”, Mom called.

“OK, I’m coming.”

I was looking to buy a horse that could be a backyard buddy, a friend and new member of the family. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, s0 I went to the local mothly horse auction to see if I might rescue one of the horses from a potential death sentence. There are always horses there who have plenty of life left and just need someone to show up and recognize their value , see their heart, and offer them a space where they can just be a loved horse.

Toward the end of the auction, a young col (小马) was brought into the ring. It was clear he hadn’t been handled and was not in good shape. He had patches of bare skin where his hair had been whipped away. He had scars where his mouth had been tied shut with a wire. His legs were covered with cuts and sores. Nobody raised their arm to place a bid. Too small to interest the meat buyers.

The auctioneer launched the bidding at 8$00. The price came down, and down. 1 felt a mixture of disgust and anger that these people were s0 incapable of seeing the beauty and will to live in this horse. Finally, the auctioneer slowed down and said, “Okay folks, who will take this guy home for fifty bucks?”

ME, apparently! My arm shot up into the air, declaring to the entire crowd that my heart is the softest.

BANG! The gavel came down, and I now owned the colt who had no training and a terrible start in life. But in this particular moment, nothing was more important than helping set this horse on a new path in life.

I saw my new horse alone in a large paddock (围场). I walked over to the gate and sod there for a while. I just stood there, watching him. I didn’t want to own this horse, and I didn’t want to train him.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I opened the gate and stepped into the paddock.
