How do you feel about bees? Do you get annoyed when they buzz around you and do you fear their mission is just to sting you? Love them or loathe them, these little insects are extremely important creatures, and without them we might starve.

Bees deserve some respect — they give us honey, and they play their part either pollinating the many vegetables and fruits we eat directly or pollinating the food for the animals that we then consume. In fact, they are the world’s most important pollinators. That’s not all — a study by the University of Reading in the UK, found bees and other pollinating insects have a global economic value of around £120bn ($150bn) and contribute around £690m ($850m) to the UK economy every year.

So, bees are worth protecting, and although a small number of bee species are vital for crops such as oilseed rape, apples and strawberries, experts say we should be taking care of all our bees. Researchers say conservation efforts should be aimed at a wide number of species — even those that currently contribute little to crop pollination —– in order to maintain biodiversity and ensure future food security.

Unfortunately, in recent times, bee populations have been declining due to pesticides, parasites, disease and habitat loss. It’s something we should be worried about because, as Gill Perkins, chief executive of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, told BBC Future website: “They provide a whole ecosystem service.” The recent lockdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic seem to have given bee populations a little boost because they faced less human disturbance, traffic and polluting fumes.

Conservationists hope, going forward, people will appreciate bees more and encourage them to thrive as they reconnect with nature. Gill Perkins says, “They are beginning to realise how their mental health and wellbeing is supported by nature — particularly by bumblebees, which are so iconic and beautiful and buzzy.” So, it really seems time to give bees a second chance.

Landscape architecture works well adding beauty to a certain location. For example, Japanese garden develops the relationship between Victoria and the Aichi Prefecture in Japan. Landscape architecture focuses on design and environment management. However, there are some amazing facts to know about while people are dealing with landscape architecture designs.

The source of the idea of landscape architecture: According to ancient tales, Frederick Law Olmsted and Capability Brown started the profession in the 18th century, known as the pioneer of landscape architecture work.

The term "landscape" first used in painting: With landscape paintings, the painter can highlight the beauty of nature while covering human and animals in little amount, by inserting the light to the paintings to leave the paintings with liveliness. When it comes to architecture, landscape means the distinguishing characteristics of natural features created by landscape architects in Melbourne for beautiful outdoors.

Australia is the capital of landscape architecture: Landscape architecture is highly appreciated in Australia due to how it has transformed beautiful cities and coastlines into the artwork highly praised by tourists and locals. Even, with so many landscape architects, it is surprising that the country has the record of having the most national parks.

The most viewed landscape is in the image of our desktop screen: The most visited landscape is the image photographed and used as the background image for Windows XP. It is the image of a small field located in North California, seen by more than 1 billion.

A sample tree won't live forever: You might have the dream of building a new house around a beautiful sample tree, but it won't go well for long. So, before designing, talk to the arborist (树艺家)to find the health of the tree.

So, next time when traveling a worth-visiting place, spend a moment appreciating the landscape architecture for the way they have estimated the necessary factors for construction project management in Melbourne and delivered the best out of their ideas.

Swimming alongside wild dolphins has long been on the Hawaii vacation list. However, scientists are concerned that increased human activities may do bad to the animals by disturbing a very important period of their rest. “We have seen changes in their action,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service said. “They will be more active with people around.”

After feeding in deep water at night, dolphins return to sheltered, shallow (浅的) water to rest during the day. The problem appears when swimmers draw them out of their resting state, a change in behavior that NOAA points out “may cause disturbance”.

“Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long-term health and the health of the population,” Garrett said. This summer, NOAA is set to put forward its new rules. “NOAA is considering a lot of measures. These measures may make some people angry, but they will undoubtedly do good to those dolphins,” Garrett said.

Today, a small number of Hawaii tour companies willingly join in a NOAA program called Dolphin SMART. Designed to lower the disturbance that dolphins suffer because of human activities to the minimum (最低限度), the program encourages tourists to stay 50 yards away from dolphins and to move away carefully if they feel the animals are disturbed.

NOAA’s new rules, however, would not be allowed to be chosen to follow or not, and could affect over 200 dolphin-related businesses as well as swimmers and other ocean users. Garrett said that new rules would keep tour companies from disturbing dolphins. “The final goal of the changes,” she said, “will be to provide more protections for dolphins while still offering a chance for tourists to have a pleasant wildlife experience”.

【小题1】What can we learn about dolphins’ living habits from the text?
A.They sleep in deep water.
B.They hunt in shallow water.
C.They rest during the nighttime.
D.They are inactive in the daytime.
【小题2】What does Garrett think of the measures to be taken by NOAA?

B.help reduce human disturbance to dolphins.
C.let people know how smart dolphins are.
D.show how to get close to dolphins in a smart way.
【小题4】In the last paragraph Garrett hopes that _________________.
A.new rules will be carried out immediately.
B.dolphin-related businesses will close down.
C.swimmers will choose to stay away from wildlife.

Humpback whales (座头鲸) are among the world’s most endangered whales. The main threats humpback whales face are strikes from ships and getting caught in fishing and waste equipment. Recently, scientists have developed a technology-powered mapping tool to prevent ships from hitting whales in areas off America’s west coast. The system is called Whale Safe. It uses equipment placed in the ocean to identify the presence of whales in the surrounding area.

Whale Safe was recently launched to the north in San Francisco Bay. There is a problem in the bay with ships hitting whales. Wildlife officials reported that a humpback whale washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay with injuries suggesting the animal was killed in a ship strike. It was the fifth whale to be killed by a ship strike in the area in 2022. However, the actual number of whales killed by ships is likely much higher because the bodies of the dead animals are rarely discovered.

The system uses three methods to identify and protect several different whale species. First, it uses flotation devices — known as buoys (浮标) — to record sounds the whales make. Second, it uses computer models to process current and historical ocean data to predict where the whales are most likely to be. Third, it permits trained observers and citizens to report whale sightings through a mobile app. The tool also records shipping activity and ship speeds. The collected data is then sent by satellite to scientists who examine it and seek to provide guidance to ship operators.

The Whale Safe project is supported by the Marine Mammal Center and the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory. Officials from the Marine Mammal Center say they have plans to expand the system to other areas where whales face a high risk of being hit by ships. “The system combines the latest technology with thoughtful conservation efforts to create a solution to reduce risk to whales. This is where technology meets Mother Nature for the benefit of marine life,” said Jeff Boehm, a leader of the Marine Mammal Center.

【小题1】What is the new tool intended for?
A.Detecting the conditions of ships.B.Protecting whales from ship strikes.
C.Locating the bodies of the dead whales.D.Recording the movements of humpback whales.
【小题2】What does the author intend to do in the second paragraph?
A.Provide some advice for readers.B.Introduce the main idea of the text.
C.Add some background information.D.Put forward a new topic for discussion.
【小题3】What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the system?
A.Its working principles.B.Its application value.
C.Its major advantages.D.Its operational guidance.
【小题4】What will the Marine Mammal Center probably do next?
A.Adjust the new system to other sea animals.
B.Provide professional training for ship operators.
C.Apply the system to other places with a high rate of crashes.
D.Seek cooperation with the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory.
