Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night. Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen.

In late January of 2021, Chicago experienced some of the coldest temperatures that the city has seen in decades. Sadly, more than 100 homeless people were left outside directly exposed to the deadly environment.

Candice Payne was lucky enough to have a shelter from the dangerous conditions. However, she couldn’t stop thinking about the homeless people in the area who had nowhere to go. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. At last, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local hotels that she could purchase for the people on the street.

However, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, that was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” Payne told TODAY.

According to Payne, each room cost $70 per night. Without hesitating, she purchased 30 rooms for the night with her credit card. She then reached out to strangers, asking if anyone would like to help out with paying for more rooms. Strangers donated money, which helped Payne pay for a total of 60 rooms for five nights.

Payne’s selfless act made news across the country, however, she insisted she never did it for attention. “I am a regular persons,” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money helping complete strangers. “It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side. I thought it was impossible, but after seeing this and seeing people from all around the world, that just tells me it’s possible. We can all do this together.”

Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. He was laughed at because of this. But there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn’t afford to buy him new clothes. Two of the kids laughing at Todd were Garrett and Graham, a pair of football players. But over time, they realized that their disparaging words seemed to be slowly destroying Todd’s spirit.

“I felt like I needed to do something,” Graham told CBS News. So he and Garrett created a plan. They went home and hunted through their own drawers and closets. The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was understandably worried about being called out by the larger boys.

“He wasn’t smiling or anything, and I was like, ‘I think this is going to make you smile,’” Graham says. “I told him, ‘We’re in the same third period, and I apologize for laughing at you, and I want to give something to you to make it up’” He then handed Todd a large bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, as well as a brand-new pair of sneakers.

Todd was wild with joy. “I was very happy,” he told CBS News. “Shocked, completely.” And Todd got much more than some new clothes. He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now he cats with his new friends, Garrett and Graham.

DNA testing is one of modern medicine’s most significant breakthroughs. Today, anyone can receive personalized information about their genes (基因) and ancestry with just a little saliva (唾液). Now, a Seattle-based company is working to bring equally deep analysis to the trillions of proteins within our bodies.

Nautilus Biotechnology, a company founded in 2016 by Seattle’s Sujal Patel and the San Francisco Bay Area’s Parag Mallick, is developing a device to identify and count 95% of the different types of proteins in a biological sample.

Human cells can contain roughly 20,000 different types of proteins, with crucial functions ranging from digestion to disease protection. Each cell has a varying amount of each protein. The company wants to measure the key machinery (机制) inside cells with a level of detail that has never been done before. Existing tools, it says. can only measure up to 8% of the different types of proteins in blood samples.

So why count proteins at all? Research shows healthy cells and diseased cells have differing amounts and forms of each protein. For example, cancer cells may have more of Protein A than Protein B. Knowing that might help in two ways: First, doctors could look for higher Protein A levels to detect cancer early. Second, researchers could better design drugs to target Protein A.

Nautilus says such protein measurements, which are unique to every person and change throughout people’s lives, will not only help doctors identify more specific forms of disease but also help pharmaceutical (制药) companies find more precise drugs with fewer side effects.

While other companies also are building new protein analysis machines, experts and prospective customers have expressed excitement over Nautilus’s approach. Mallick, chief scientist of Nautilus and the brain behind its technology, is confident: “It’s not every day when you get…to work on something. That’s the opportunity to change all of biology.”
