When I was 14 years old, I was a straight A student in the middle school of our small town. I didn’t try particularly hard, I just went to all my classes and paid attention. I could get good grades with minimal effort. I had a great group of friends too: kids I grew up with, that I had known nearly all my life. We hung out together on weekends very often. It seemed there was nothing to be worried about. I think it was the happiest time in my teenage years.

Then my family moved to the UK just before I went to high school because my father changed his job, and everything changed. I was the only Asian in my class. Overnight, I had no friends, and was in a new country where everyone was different. While trying to adapt to the new surroundings and cultures, it turned out that going to public school in a big city like London was much harder than the tiny classroom in my home country that I was used to. Teachers barely knew my name, and all the other kids thought I was strange because of my accent.

It was so hard to fit in. I went to school alone, ate in the canteen alone, and studied in the library alone. No one even wanted to be in the same group with me in class as I always couldn’t understand what other students were talking about. I would cry all night when I went back home. The only thing I dreamed of was going back to the place I once belonged to!

The class and subjects in the UK were so much different to me. Although I had taken English classes before we moved here, the teachers spoke English so fast that I couldn’t catch up at all! Just as I expected, I started underperforming: I tried so hard, but it just wasn’t working. I studied a lot, but then I’d go to the exam, and would get so nervous. Sweating and trembling, I felt like my mind would go blank. All that effort, and I failed anyway. I started to lose my self-confidence. Maybe I wasn’t good enough.

I have always been free and easy when it comes to handing out small change on the street, and a couple of months ago I lend 200 to a man I had never met before. Anyway, let me tell you about Brendan.

On my way back to London, I spotted a man with a large backpack and his thumb out to ask for a free lift. I pulled over and lowered the window.

“Which way are you heading?” I asked. “I’m going back to London.”

“Ah, that would be grand,” came his immediate reply. He opened the door and put his backpack on the back seat, “I’m Brendan,” he said with a smile. “I’ve had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”

As we headed cast along the motorway, Brendan told me about the two recent family tragedies that had pushed him out of his old life and on to the road. He told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (离网) lifestyle until the week before when he’d been mugged (抢劫). And now he just wanted to get some casual work in London, so he could then get himself home to Ireland.

It must have been the notion of home that got me and helping a man who’d clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do. To my surprise I heard myself say: “Well, I’ll lend you 200 to fly home, Brendan.”

“Grand,” he replied excitedly. Then, after a pause, “and please don’t worry. I’ll definitely pay back the money when I get home.” He took my phone number and address, saying he’d call as soon as he could.

Eight weeks past, a call from Brendan made me disappointed.

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me, who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.

I’m the only procrastinator in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently believing my method of getting things done was just as good as my sister’s…or so I thought.

At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment, my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety- -but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.
