When I was in college, a white cat often showed up on our campus. It was clear 【小题1】 he was a stray (流浪的) cat because he looked thin and weak. Students would play with him after class and feed him all kinds of food. The school didn’t say anything about the cat for 【小题2】 long time.

But while the rest of us ignored the cat, a security guard at our school decided to take on the 【小题8】 (responsible) of caring for him. He took the cat to a vet for a health check. He then went to a nearby supermarket and bought food for the cat, as well as a small bed for him to sleep in. He made sure the cat was healthy and 【小题9】 (comfort).

It might seem like a small effort to some people. 【小题10】 this man risked his job - his only source of income - just to feed a tiny cat who no one else cared for. It was a very heartwarming thing to see.

Wildlife Secrets of Nigeria’s Last Wilderness

Researchers from Chester Zoo, working with the Nigeria National Park Service, surveyed over 1,000 square kilometres of the national park. Known 【小题1】 its mountain rainforests and rolling grasslands, it is home to some of West Africa’s most threatened animals.

The cameras 【小题2】 (spot) some animals that have never been recorded before in the area and others, like chimps(黑猩猩), 【小题3】 are rarely seen. Stuart Nixon, the Africa Field Programme Co-ordinator at Chester Zoo, said confirmation of the locations of chimps was an important discovery. “Gashaka’s been regarded for many years as 【小题4】 (have) the biggest population of this Nigeria-Cameroon chimp,” he said. “We consider it the most important population—that’s really 【小题5】 we need to count it and see what the status of the chimp is right now—that will eventually affect what we know about this subspecies elsewhere.”

The chimp 【小题6】 (endanger) across its range in Cameroon and Nigeria. Its total population is down to fewer than 9,000 individuals, of which about 1,000 are thought 【小题7】 (live) within the borders of the national park. “It’s an amazing tool to use these camera traps and to reveal that this park—which is a 【小题8】 (forget) wilderness, really, for Nigeria—still has a really important store of important species for Nigeria and Africa in general,” said Stuart Nixon.

Chester Zoo is funding guards for the rangers and providing training in wildlife monitoring and protection. “This work is helping us learn more about the secrets of one of our last wilderness areas and we must continue to work together to ensure 【小题9】 survival for future generations,” said Stuart Nixon, “ 【小题10】 all this beauty were lost, it would be a terrible tragedy for all.”

The distinctive black and white bear 【小题2】 （regard ）as an “umbrella species”. That means protecting the mountain forests 【小题3】 they live has been good for many other animals, including birds and small animals that mainly feed on meat.

Yet, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Ecology Evolution, it’s a 【小题4】 （complete）different story for larger predators（食肉动物） such as leopards and wolves. Asian wild dogs have disappeared from 95% of areas set up 【小题5】 （protect） pandas in the 1960s. Leopards, wolves and snow leopards have also been found much 【小题6】 （few） than before. Scientists in China say these four predators are being driven 【小题7】 near extinction by illegal hunting and destruction of 【小题8】 （they） habitat.

Conservation efforts have often been based on protecting specific species such as the panda. But experts argue for a new approach that 【小题9】 （aim） to protect whole ecosystems, rather than focusing on a single species. Thus, the   【小题10】 （disappear） of larger predators will hopefully slow down.
