When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her Chinese English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has long realized that the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was made to ask for information or even to shout at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing (令人相信的), “This is Mrs. Tan.”

And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he doesn’t send me check already two weeks late.”

And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather worried. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”

My mother then talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York to tell him in front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped me see things, express ideas, and make sense of the world.

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’ too.But at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we’d be gone an hour, then we should be gone one hour or less -- not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see how mean she was.
The worst is yet to come.We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept - my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor Law.She made us   work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook.We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day.The other kids always wore their clothes for days.We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit.We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to live up to expectations. Our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would be satisfied with nothing less than ugly black marks.
As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.
My mother was a complete failure as a mother.Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education.None of us have ever been arrested or divorced. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults.I am now trying to raise my three children.I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Why? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the whole world.

My father was attached to gardening by birth. One of my earliest memories is following Dad barefoot around in the garden with both hands blackened from digging in the soil. The garden is a wonderland full of possibilities.

As Dad grew older, he still loved gardening. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still planted all sorts of plants. Sometimes, I would come over to visit, and we would walk together in the garden. But then, something changed. Like the weeds that took over his garden, the cancer grew rapidly in Dad. I stayed with Dad twenty-four hours a day and I found myself in all kinds of uncomfortable situations with Dad until I promised to care for the garden.

Though I had heard the words of the doctor, what really made me believe that Dad was dying was the state of his garden. That year, he only planted tomatoes. Too tired to weed them, he simply tied them with strong strings to the fence and let them be. It made me sad to see them ignored, so I would come over and water them once in a while, and remove the weeds. I still remember the day I picked the last tomato from the vine(藤). That day was one of the saddest I had ever experienced in my life.

Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden. I decided I would start out with just a few tomatoes. That morning when I moved to the garden, something caught the corner of my eyes and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, standing barefoot in the soil, happily playing in the soil.

I know a lot about gardening because of my grandparents. My grandfather Ya Ya loved gardening. After his arrival in Canada, Ya Ya opened a small restaurant while my grandmother, Yang Yang, didn’t speak any English.

Ya Ya took great pride in growing snap peas (甜荷兰豆), carrots, which he used in home cooking. The entire backyard was devoted to his plants.

When Ya Ya died, my grandmother pulled up most of the remaining plants. Still only a child, I asked my cousin why Yang Yang had dug up Ya Ya’s plants. She told me that the garden reminded Yang Yang of my grandfather’s absence.

Years passed, and my father moved Yang Yang to be closer to family, which meant taking her away from her home and from the remains of the garden. Shortly after the move, she telephoned my father, and I could hear her tearfully shouting in Chinese, asking why he had moved her so far away from her life.

Gradually, Yang Yang became accustomed to the new house. One evening, she gestured (用动作示意) for me to the backyard. There, in a small patch (块) of soil, was a row of Chinese spinach (菠菜). She was gardening at 92.

I now have a house and family of my own. I often think back to Ya Ya’s garden. And I think about how Yang Yang started over again, tending (照料) to new greenery in a new city, far from her first home in Canada, and even farther from China.

We all must start somewhere, and sometimes we must start again. And sometimes, starting again simply involves (包含) allowing new roots to grow.
