Video Games Foster Creativity?

Video games that foster creative freedom can increase creativity under certain conditions, according to new research from Iowa State University. The experimental study compared the effect f playing Mine-craft(《我的世界》-一款游戏), with or without instruction, to watching a TV show or playing a race video game. Those 【小题1】 (give) the freedom to play Mine-craft without instruction were most creative.

“It’s not just that Mine-craft can help induce creativity. There seems to be something about choosing to do it that also matters,” said Douglas Gentile, a professor of psychology.

【小题2】 you are not familiar with the game, Gentile says Mine-craft is like a virtual Lego world. The game, which has sold more than 100 million copies, allows players to explore unique worlds and create anything they can imagine. Study participants randomly assigned to play Mine-craft were split into two groups. The one receiving instruction was told to play as creatively as possible.

After 40 minutes of play or watching TV, the 352 participants completed several creativity tasks. 【小题3】 (measure) creative production, they were asked to draw a creature from a world much different than Earth. More human like creature scored low for creativity and those less human-like scored high. Surprisingly, those instructed to be creative while playing Mine-craft were the 【小题4】 (creative).

Gentile says there’s no clear explanation for this finding. In the paper published by Creativity Research Journal, he, Jorge Blanco-Herrera, lead author and former master’s student in psychology: and Jeffrey Rokkum, former Ph. D. student in psychology, outlined possible reasons why the instructed Mine-craft group scored lower. Blanco-Herrera says the instructions may have changed subjects’ motivation for play.

【小题5】 (tell) to be creative may have actually limited their options while playing, resulting in a less creative experience,” Blanco-Herrera said. “It’s also possible they used all their ‘creative juices’ while playing and had 【小题6】 left when it came time to complete the test.”

Video games can have both harmful and beneficial effects. Gentile’s previous research has shown the amount, content and context and video games 【小题7】 (influence) what players learn through repeated experiences. 【小题8】 much of Gentile’s research has focused on aggression or pro-social behavior, he says the same appears to be true for creativity.

Most video games encourage players to practice some level of creativity. For example, players may create a character and story for role-playing games or be rewarded for creative strategies in competitive games. The researchers say even first-person shooter games 【小题9】 potentially inspire creativity as players think about strategy and look for advantages in combat.

“The research is starting to tell a more interesting, nuanced picture. Our results are similar to other gaming research 【小题10】 you get better at what you practice, but how you practice might matter just as much, ” Gentile said.

Recently, ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, went viral (走红), with related topics 【小题1】 (generate) a lot of buzz (议论纷纷).

Chatbots and artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT that can almost instantly produce 【小题2】 (increasing) complicated written content, are already being used 【小题3】 ( perform) a variety of tasks. “If you are writing a code (代码) where really all you do is convert an idea to a code, the machine can do that. To some extent we would need 【小题4】 (few) programmers, because it could take away jobs. But it would also help those 【小题5】 program to find mistakes in code and write code more efficiently,” Netzer said.

Writing simple administrative(管理)or scheduling emails for things like setting up or canceling appointments could also easily be outsourced (外包) to a tool 【小题6】 ChatGPT, according to Netzer. David Autor, 【小题7】 MIT economist who specializes in labor, pointed to some mid-level white-collar jobs as functions that can 【小题8】 (handle) by AI, including work like writing human resources letters, producing advertising copy and drafting press releases.

“There are parts of a legal document that 【小题9】(human) need to adapt to a particular situation, but 90% of the document is copy-pasted (复制粘贴的),” Netzer said. “There is no doubt 【小题10】 we would have the machine write these kinds of legal documents.”

Merriam-Webster defines a princess as a “member of a royal family”, “the wife of a prince” or “usually an attractive girl or woman who 【小题1】 (treat) with special attention”.

Nowhere in that traditional definition 【小题2】 the words “courage, “drive” or “determination” appear. And yet the latest Walt Disney animation Moana《海洋奇缘》 seems determined to redefine 【小题3】 a princess is all about.

In Moana, Disney’s latest movie provides a positive spin on the princess spirit. The CG (Computer Graphics) -animated musical film follows 【小题4】 adventures of the headstrong teenage daughter of a Pacific Island chief and her struggles to find her identity.

【小题5】 the daughter of Chief Tui, Moana is expected to follow her village’s traditions and rules, including the one her father 【小题6】 (emphasize) since she was an infant: “Don’t go beyond the reef.”

Unfortunately for Moana, 【小题7】 name just happens to be the word for “ocean” in many Polynesian languages, she is drawn to the water, which she finds wondrous and exciting.

When the food supply for the island suddenly becomes reduced, Moana sets forth on a journey inspired by ancestral tales of once-mighty demigod Maui who may help her save her island home.

The story, 【小题8】 (inspire) by the history and traditions of the Pacific, is a breath of fresh ocean air for everyone exhausted by the too-familiar princess-on-a-mission Disney trope. From birth, Moana is a respected part of her community, and her parents and grandmother are proud of who she is and the fact 【小题9】 she will one day make a fantastic chief, just like her father and his father before him. There is no love interest for Moana – she doesn’t need one.

More importantly, 【小题10】 mothers and fathers tell their daughters what it means to be a princess, the words “adventurous,” “tenacious” and “compassionate” can now be added to the definition.
