Once upon a time, there was a tortoise (乌龟) on a ship, but the ship sank. Some time later the tortoise made it to a desert land surrounded by water on all sides except for one. The side led up to a big mountain. To avoid starving (挨饿) to death, the tortoise decided to climb to the top of the mountain, hoping that he would be able to cross to the other side.

When he got to the mountain, he felt very cold. He just managed to make out a small pathway leading down the other side of the mountain, but there was a big monster on the way.

Such a strong animal almost killed the tortoise with fright, and all he wanted to do was hide his head inside his shell. Then he saw that many other animals were lying frozen to death, and with looks of horror on their faces. So the tortoise didn’t go into his shell.

He gathered up all his courage to move down the path towards the monster. The closer the tortoise got, the more the monster changed its shape. Then, when he was almost upon it, the tortoise realized that what he had thought was a monster was only a great pile of rocks, which formed a shape just like a monster.

The tortoise carried on and eventually came to a beautiful village. The tortoise lived very happily there, and became known as the brave little tortoise.

When   photographer   Simon   Czapp   took   pictures   of   a curious five-month-old fox, he soon realized this little fox was attracted by his subject. The clever fox was so curious about the camera equipment that she climbed on top of it. And while she was supposed to be the subject of the shoot, the fox stood on the shutter release button (快门按钮) and took her own frames.

Mr. Czapp visited the New Forest Wildlife Park to capture images of new arrival Jessie. Jessie is a lovely little fox. She has been at the animal park in Ashurst, Hampshire—home to wolves, deer and others in 25 acres of ancient woodland after being abandoned by her mother.

Mr. Czapp said, “Jessie was very playful and curious and not shy at all in front of the camera. Soon after I arrived she was chewing my shoes and everything seemed to be a game to her. Then she started exploring the camera I had set up on a tripod (三脚架). She stood on her back legs to look at the back of the camera. She balanced her front paws on it and at one point knocked it over. ”

He put the camera back on the tripod and Jessie soon jumped back up. At one point she had all four paws on the camera and was keeping her balance. Mr. Czapp added, “She jumped up there several times and I realized it could make a good picture. As I was leaving away with the public’s viewing window (取景窗) behind me, I thought I heard the camera go off but didn’t think much of it. However, when I checked the memory card afterwards, I was amazed to see Jessie had actually taken two frames of me photographing her. I couldn’t believe I had been outfoxed (智取) by a fox! There were some lovely photos of her but she obviously thought the photographer was worthy of a picture too! ”

When the natural climate changes due to global warming, it can surely affect seals. The majority of them live in the Antarctic region so as the ice is melting, their natural habitat (栖息地)can be seriously affected. These changes don’t take place overnight. They can be the result of many years of additional temperatures in the area. The seals then have to find ways to adapt.

Seals depend on the cool air currents to bring plenty of food for them. When the temperatures get higher, there is less and less food and the seal population starts to get depleted. Mothers aren’t healthy enough to feed their babies. Many of them end up abandoned as the mothers have to leave to find their own source of food.

The fact that their desire to produce young can be changed by the warmer temperatures is frightening too. It is also believed that the warmer temperatures can allow different diseases and viruses to attack the seals. This is a huge concern as they can rapidly wipe out huge numbers of seals out there.

However, these changes in climate and temperature aren’t all bad for other species of seals. Scientists have found that those living in warmer climates are producing more young due to the changes. Research also shows that the females are moving further to find food and water. When they are out of the reach of the governing males, they are more willing to accept the moves of other males in the group.

This is good news too because it means that there will be more selection in the gene pool (基因库)for future generations. It can help the seals as a species adapt to changes in their natural environment more easily.

The climate change problem for seals is directly linked to humans. When we take action to change what we let out into the environment, we will make positive changes for the seals. However, it is going to take a very long time to reverse (彻底改变)the effects of what has already been done.

Did you know that vegetables can grow in the climates they are not used to? Cool climate vegetables like asparagus (芦笋) are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. In Hawaii, marine (海的) engineers have been able to actually let you believe such vegetables are living in hotter climates. In that way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is simply cold sea water. How did they use it? They place pipes in the soil and cold water flowing through them cools the earth. This causes plant growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates (热带气候) to grow crops from cooler climates. Also some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they make the air "wet" and thus water the gardens. What especially makes people happy about this process (过程) is that nothing bad to the natural conditions is being used. Another new use of cold ocean water is to cool buildings. Engineers believe that the entire west coast of the United States could be air-conditioned by using sea water.

【小题1】What does the new system enable the gardeners to do?
A.Water the field with sea water.
