David was upset by the plastic going into the oceans. To help solve the problem, he had a 【小题1】 (create) idea - to create plastic like money. David calls his idea the “Plastic Bank”. The goal of Plastic Bank is to use plastic to help people solve the problems   【小题2】 (gradual). The Plastic Bank adds a value to plastic waste by 【小题3】 (pay) people to recycle it.

The program began in 2015 in Haiti, a poor island nation with many problems of waste plastic. The Plastic Bank has opened 30 “markets” in Haiti. At the Plastic Bank markets, people can exchange the plastic they’ve collected for 【小题4】 they need. The Plastic Bank markets sell lots of things the local people need. The stores also allow plastic collectors 【小题5】(use) the money they earn to pay 【小题6】 health care or school. To make sure that the plastic is recycled, the Plastic Bank works with partners,   【小题7】 agree to use the plastic that is collected. When customers buy these products, which are labeled “Social Plastic”, they know that they are both helping people in other parts of the world 【小题8】 keeping plastic out of the oceans. So far, the Plastic Bank 【小题9】(keep) about 7 million pounds of plastic out of the oceans. It makes a great 【小题10】 (contribute) to the ocean world.

Struggling for a better environment

Wang Tao, 50,   【小题1】 (be) a “green woodpecker (啄木鸟)” for the city of Beijing for 16 years. By using the nickname, he’s referring to the volunteer-based environmental protection work 【小题2】 (do) by the Beijing Green Woodpecker Association, an organization he founded in 2006.

He views the 【小题3】 (volunteer) as guardians of the city’s environment, in the same way that woodpeckers usually are for the forest.

Wang started by admonishing (告诫) people who spat on the ground, a deed he 【小题4】 (initial) felt shy to speak out about,   【小题5】 he was determined and, over the years, has insisted on doing so. He started doing it out of a 【小题6】 (person) dislike of such impolite and unhygienic (不卫生的) behavior, and a desire to contribute further to society.

Previous media reports had him recall an incident in May 2006,   【小题7】 he was wandering in Tian’anmen Square, with a pack of tissues in hand, and 【小题8】 (observe) the visitors. It was his first-time acting as a self-appointed volunteer.

Upon spotting 【小题9】 young postcard vendor (小贩) clearing his throat and spitting, he rushed up and handed over a tissue, asking the man 【小题10】 (wipe) the phlegm (痰) up off the floor.
