The men of influence in our lives are our fathers, brothers, grandfathers, uncles, and friends and they play an important role in our lives. They lead by example, teaching us how to move physically through our world, how to be strong in the face of adversity, how to be wise, and how to provide for ourselves and our families.

My dad taught me how to have natural fun, playing baseball in the middle of the street, in his stocking feet. Today my dad continues to influence me in positive ways. He has faced a challenging health problem over the past few months and has carried on with his life in much the same way as he did before his illness, going about his daily business a bit slower and needing to take more rests but still living his life the way he wishes to.

My grandfather taught me the value of being trusted. My father-in-law influenced my life in a different way. He was quiet, loyal, loving and a man of power. When he spoke, I listened, as he did not speak unless he had something to say.

My loving husband has encouraged me to be strong and independent, to think for myself, and not to look to him for permission. My husband has also taught me to adapt with him to the ever-changing reality of his journey with illness, and he has met each one with courage and dignity (自尊). I have learned much from the men who have had an influence on my life. For all that I have learned and for the role they played and continue to play in my life I am forever thankful.

I would like to wish all the men of the world a Happy Father’s Day. You make a difference to the men, women, and children who meet you every day. No matter what your role is, you are a man of influence.

Jon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a store carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash.Dressed in plain clothes,Jon Hoffman caught the man and pressed him against the hood(引擎盖) of his car. But Hoffman had trouble controlling the thief, and they got into a struggle.

“The detective has a military background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a military background, too, because he was able to break away so easily,” a local police spokesperson said.

The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching were Harvey and Kirby, two day laborers.

Harvey did what has become common these days—he took out his phone to shoot the video. “I hate to say it,but I thought that this policeman was doing something stupid,”Harvey said. “But when he asked for help,I thought, well, there wouldn’t be shooting if I got over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action, while he was still recording the video. So did Kirby.

“Harvey caught hold of the suspect’s arms, while Kirby seized his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs(手铐) on,”said the police spokesperson. The 27yearold suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than$50.

“I’ve been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life,”Harvey said. “It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive.”

After the arrest, the three men got to know each other at a local steak house—Hoffman’s treat,as a thank you.

How do you kill your time when you go to work? Most of us stare at our cell phones, and refuse to make eye contact with others. We just read, chat with others online or play games online. Or maybe we’re using the time between stops to do our makeup, catch up on emails, or read a few chapters of a book. However, Dina Alfasi takes a very different approach.

Each day she has to travel hours on buses and trains to get to her engineering job at a hospital in Israel. Rather than look at her cell phone in silence, she uses one very special way to have connection with strangers. It is portraits of the people she meets on public transport every day that she is taking. The photographs catch those quiet and personal moments of people readying themselves for the day ahead. Some people lean their head against the window and go to sleep, some stare into space and have a daydream, and others sit quietly to read their documents or books. Each picture captures one tiny moment in people’s lives, ripe with potential for your imagination. It is wonderful for her to look at someone’s commute and make up an entire story about the rest of their daily existence, from the father travelling with a baby to the woman welcoming a change.

“What inspires me very much are the little moments that happen every day, ” Dina told My Modern Met. “My work is to tell stories through a single portrait, and it proves that all you need is just to look around and find those magic moments.”

Every year around this time, Girl Scouts (女童军) wear their uniforms and set up tables at supermarkets and on sidewalks to sell boxes of cookies in the US. According to the Girl Scouts of America, approximately 200 million boxes of cookies are sold each year. Girl Scouts depend on the cookie program to fund life-changing, girl-led programs and educational opportunities.

However, amid the outbreak of COVID-19, millions of dollars worth of cookies are going unsold.

Amanda Kopelman, 16, came up with an idea and discussed it with the members of her Plantation Troop 10442.

They are donating unsold cookies to medical professionals and first responders (急救员).

“Having been a Girl Scout for the past 12 years and the top cookie seller for the past seven years, it truly breaks my heart when I hear that the cookie sales of my Girl Scout sisters across the nation have been cut short,” Kopelman said.

She said knowing everyone is going through similar things, and having an international group of girls to talk to have made her time spent at home productive and pleasant.

“The best thing about staying home under these conditions is that I’ve truly become more tech-savvy (精通技术的) and have more time to connect with many of my Girl Scout friends,” she said.

Not only are they studying and working on virtual patches (电子贴布) and earning badges (徽章), but they are also staying connected.

Madelyn Streisfeld, 15, said that while she misses the hands-on (亲自动手的) activities and face-to-face communication scouting provides, she recognizes that having to stay home has its benefits.

“We’ve been able to spend a lot more time with each other online,” she said.

They also participate in a fitness program and game nights together. “Having group video chats helps keep us connected during this scary time, this (donation) project especially has been the highlight (亮点) of my time at home,” she said.

“Troop 10442 is a wonderful example of true Girl Scout sisterhood,” said Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida CEO Lisa Johnson. “Their think-outside-the-(cookie)-box donation is taking the leadership skills they have learned throughout their many years of Girl Scouts and putting them into action to make a difference during this difficult time.”
