Pre-College Program Courses

The Harvard Pre-College Program will be hosting all courses online for Summer 2022. To encourage interactive learning, class sizes are small and typically range from 12 to 18 students. In this collegial setting, you will practice the art of healthy debates, learn to communicate clearly on complex topics, and deliver presentations on your own research, all under the guidance of Harvard instructors for a true Ivy League experience. At the end of the program, you will receive a written evaluation from your instructor, as well as a Harvard transcript (成绩单) with a grade of AR or NM (“requirements met” or “requirements not met”).

Course: Care in Critical Times

July 5-August 16, Monday to Thursday, 8:30-11:00 am

What is care? How can and do communities encourage care as a tool for building healing, and hope? This course requires students not only to ask how they might get involved in caring acts with their own communities, but to complete a locally based community project that brings care.

Course: Introduction to Neuroscience

This course is an introduction to the nervous system, with emphasis on the structure and function of the human brain.

Course: College Writing

July 1- July 22, Thursday to Saturday, 8:00-11:30 am

This course introduces students to college writing by taking them through the steps required to complete a five-page analytic essay. Students read a range of classic and contemporary short stories, and develop strategies for careful close reading through class discussion and in-class exercises.

Course: The Economics of Cities

June 17-July 29, Sunday to Thursday, 3:15-6:15 pm

What causes cities to grow, and what limits their growth? What are the costs of urban living, and how can they be overcome? We examine a range of major urban issues from an economic view: traffic and transportation; water, public health and the role of cities in promoting economic growth and technological innovation.

RISE is an exciting project designed and led by young pope for young people. Created by St John Ambulance, the nation’s leading first-aid charity, the project is now available in communities across the country. If you’re aged between 16 and 25 years old, and are not in employment, education or training. RISE could help you learn new skills, and improve your prospects.

What you’ll learn

St John Ambulance believes that everyone should have access to first aid, and we are devoted to equipping as many people as possible with the skills to be the difference between life and death. As a participant you’ll learn first aid through our Stick-it sessions, and also get the opportunity to develop new skills, giving you the confidence to train others in your community, or the qualifications in youth leadership you need to get your career up and running.

Choosing the right path for you

At the heart of the RISE project is a commitment to peer-to-peer learning. As well as being taught first aid, you’ll be given the skills and guidance to pass your knowledge on to other people in your community. RISE offers you the chance to gain a range of qualifications and to choose a path that helps you make the most of your talents.

Stick-it: Our one-day introduction to first aid focuses on knife related injuries. You’ll find out how to manage an incident and learn some of the most commonly needed first-aid skills.

First aid: You’ll focus on CPR (心肺复苏术) and dealing with an emergency situation on this six-hour course.

Keeping children safe: A course designed for those who come into contact with children through their work or leisure activities. This short program works by helping individuals to understand the unusual role they play in keeping children safe from harm.

Essential skills in youth work: This course provides an introduction to St John Ambulance and is the minimum qualification for a youth leadership role within the organization.

Oyster is pleased to offer sea conservation volunteers the opportunity to take part in a 3-day diving course in South Africa.

What qualification will I receive?

●Upon successful completion of the e-learning and the practical course, you will receive a NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) diving qualification.

What are the requirements?

●You will need to be staying for a minimum period of 2 weeks on the shark volunteering project. (It’s highly recommended that you join for 4 weeks, so that you can throw yourself into the volunteer project and allow for bad weather.)

●Completion of a medical evaluation form before taking part in the course.

How does it work?

●Before arrival in South Africa, you will start an e-learning course.

●The e-learning course takes about 14 hours to complete.

●Once in South Africa, you will receive 17 hours of practical instruction, of which 10 hours are spent in the water.

●You will not have a set date for your diving course before departure, as this is dependent on weather.

How much does it cost?

Learning to dive in South Africa as part of the sea conservation volunteering project will cost just $350. Payment must be made in advance to secure your place.
