China’s leading express companies established “Green Delivery Day” on Tuesday, in a bid to reduce pollution caused by the logistics industry.

China Environmental Protection Foundation, Alibaba Foundation, and China’s express giants including Alibaba’s logistics arm Cainiao Network, STO Express, YTO Express, ZTO Express, Shanghai Yunda Express and Best Express established “Green Delivery Day” at the 2019 Global Smart Logistics Summit held in Hangzhou, capital of eastern China’s Zhejiang Province. The day will be marked on May 28 each year. They also announced plans to install 50,000 green recycling bins across the country.

China’s express delivery sector handled 50.7 billion parcels in 2018, an increase of 26.6 percent year-on-year, according to the State Post Bureau. Meanwhile, the sector’s income was 603.8 billion yuan (87.37 billion US dollars), up 21.8 percent from the previous year.

However, environmental pollution caused by mass express packaging has aroused concern. The express industry has been making efforts to reduce pollution over the past few years.

The emergence of digital express sheets has helped save over 300 billion sheets of paper, while recycled environmental-friendly packaging has helped save 200 million disposable plastic bags.

Meanwhile, express firms have introduced more environmental-friendly materials to make packaging bags. And they have used new energy vehicles, and set up recycle stations across the country.

“I would like to put express cartons into a recycling bin to promote the recycling of cartons. It is not just about the express industry, but the whole of society. And the establishment of ‘Green Delivery Day’ can attract more people to engage,” a customer said at the launching ceremony.

Will you stop using plastic?

If you take a look around your kitchen or office right now, chances are that you’ll notice you’re surrounded by plastic—water bottles, to-go coffee cups, straws (吸管), plastic grocery bags, food wrappers, take-out containers, single-serve coffee pods and produce bags. 【小题1】

It’s certainly not realistic to remove all plastic from your life, but let’s examine some statistics that may encourage you to reduce your single-use plastic footprint by throwing away straws, switching to reusable water bottles, bringing cloth bags to the grocery store and more.

According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, the popularity of plastic, which began rising in the 1950s, is growing out of control. 【小题2】 And there’s no sign of slowing down, considering scientists say that another 12 trillion kilograms will be produced worldwide by 2050.

“Every piece of plastic that has ever been created will remain in the environment in some form, but once we conveniently throw out our rubbish at home, wind and runoff carry our waste from landfills and streets to the ocean,” says Mystic Aquarium’s chief clinical veterinarian Jennifer Flower, DVM, MS. “Given that we are globally producing over 320 million tons of plastic annually, the marine environment is taking a big hit from our daily disposal of plastic.

【小题3】 For example, newborn fish are mistaking tiny bits of plastic waste for food. If they die, there will be fewer big fish—and that could damage the food chain. Often our society is so focused on making our lives more convenient in the short term, but in the long run, our health and the health of marine life are at the expense of those everyday conveniences.”

【小题4】 A recent report suggests that when heated, certain food additives (添加剂) can damage hormones, growth and development, as well as increase chances for children of being fat. 【小题5】 It is found in plastic containers and metal cans. Parents are urged to avoid using microwaves to warm food and drinks or placing plastics in the dishwasher.

A.Our plastic consumption is directly affecting the life in the ocean.
B.People are concerned about the results of overusing plastic containers.
C.8.2 trillion kilograms of plastic have been produced around the world.
D.Using plastic containers in microwaves is also harmful to children’s health.
E.Let’s stop using plastic for the benefit of the environment and human beings.
F.These are all examples of single-use plastic products, which is a hot topic nowadays.
G.The most concerning artificial additive BPA is a chemical used in the production of plastics.

Have you ever had the feeling that you can’t think when there is too much noise around? Did you ever think a fish could experience that feeling too? A recent paper published in Science titled “Soundscape (声景) of the Anthropocene Oceans”, combined over 10,000 scientific papers, confirming that undersea life knows that exact same feeling, more often than not. Anthropogenic (人为的) ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on marine life due to “human-caused” activity within and neighboring our oceans.

Disney Pixar’s animated film Finding Nemo educated us about the ocean, and specifically within the ordinary world of a clown fish. A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae (幼体), drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs. There is only one drawback-the fish can’t physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can’t hear it, will they ever make it home?

Our anthropogenic ocean noise, such as cargo ships, ship and boat propellers (螺旋桨), surfing, deep sea mining, etc. are causing destruction of marine life. According to Time, sound is the sensory signal that travels the farthest through the ocean. Anthropogenic noise drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine life under immense stress. Altogether, this stress then affects their general health, disrupts their behavior, physiology, reproduction and, in extreme cases, causes death. Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it. This only renders further complications of forcing species to leave their traditional breeding regions or their families.

Now, what if we told you there is already a solution? Multiple solutions, ideas and designs are currently in the works or already exist to reduce and reverse the damage of anthropogenic ocean noise. As Time explains, from wind-powered ships to noise-reducing propellers, floating wind turbines and “bubble curtains” that muffle construction noise, the solutions are already available and in some cases, cost-effective. The authors of the paper hope it will catch the attention of policymakers, who historically speaking, have ignored the matter still to this day.

Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling, luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise (妥协方案) humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.

Tigers are faced with many threats, including poaching(偷猎), illegal trade and habitat loss to name a few. It’s little wonder that their population has declined from 100,000 a century ago to just 3,500 today.

But despite these challenges, Nepal’s wild tigers have successfully returned from the edge of extinction with a 190 per cent population increase since 2009. According to Nepal’s National Tiger and Prey Survey 2022, there are now 355 wild tigers in the country, compared to 121 in 2010. This amounts to a 190 per cent increase, meaning that the country nearly tripled its tiger population.

Ginette Hemley, Senior Vice President for wildlife conservation at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said,“Tigers in Nepal and everywhere else that they live in Asia, about 10countries, were on a steady decline because of two key reasons. The most immediate reason was poaching for the illegal animal trade. The second reason was loss of habitat.”

To achieve this comeback in tiger numbers, Nepal laid ban on poaching, with anti-poaching groups patrolling protected areas. Another factor in the country’s success was the restoration of corridors to promote the safe passage and genetic distribution of tigers in protected areas.

Hemley said,“ Nepal really does stand out as a leader in conservation, especially for tigers. There is support for conservation of tigers at the highest level of government. That has translated into really effective habitat conservation, bolstering the protection of tigers in national parks, the wildlife reserves.” As well as government support, she pointed to community involvement in conservation projects as a reason for Nepal’s success. Hopefully, we will continue to see a recovery in the tiger population, as well as measures taken to protect local communities.

【小题1】What does the author think of the decrease of the tiger population?
