It was the night before Christmas and Rob was lying in bed, thinking about the next day. His family was poor, living entirely on the farm they ran, and most of the excitement of Christmas was in the turkey they had raised themselves and pumpkin pies his mother made. He rolled over to look at his old watch — it was two o'clock. Three hours later, his father would call him to get up, even if it was Christmas.

His father never talked about loving him — he had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm. “Or maybe, he just doesn’t love me,” Rob thought. He had a reason to think so. At 5 o'clock every morning, his father would call him to get up and help with the farm work. He had to go to the barn (棚) to hold the milking pails (挤奶桶) steadily when his father was milking the cow. He had to help put the tools in place and do the cleaning after the milking. He hated it that he had to do all these things at so early time.

He was not the only one awake at this night. He heard his parents whispering in the next room. “Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I going to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone.”

“Well, you can’t, Adam,” His mother’s voice was gentle. Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time he took his turn.”

“Yes,” his father said slowly. “But I do hate to wake him.”

When he heard these words, something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, taking for granted the tie of their blood. Now that he knew his father loved him, he had to do something different on this Christmas. He did save and buy them each something every year, but he wished he had a better present for his father instead of the usual tie from the ten-cent store.

I looked forward to a visit to my grandma, who lived in a hospital 2000 miles away from my home. Grandma suffered from Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症) since she was 80. I realized how important it was to see her again soon.

When I arrived at the hospital, I found grandma lived in a simple room and spent most of her day doing simple things, which was considered as dementia (痴呆). Seeing my grandma come in, I smiled, hugged and kissed her, and said, “Nice to see you, grandma.” She didn’t recognize who I was! I was shocked.

Stressed out, I spent several hours trying to connect with my grandma — talking with her, walking around the grounds, looking at family pictures in her room, chatting with the doctors —doing whatever I could think of to help grandma recognize her grandson. But nothing worked. Suddenly I had an idea. I thought of the strawberry milkshake that might stir her memory.

When I was a kid, my family was not rich enough to buy many strawberries. Even so, my grandma would buy some to make the strawberry milkshake, which became my favourite drink. Every time she made it, my family would sit around the table, drinking and chatting. And grandma was always watching me drinking the milkshake. If I drank up mine, she would pour hers into my glass. I believe that was her unforgettable memory.

The next morning, I visited grandma with two glasses of milkshakes.

“Are you ready for our walk?” Grandma asked the usual question every Friday evening.

“Of course, we are!" We shouted excitedly, ready to talk about the end of the week and fill Grandma in about our week.

Growing up, my sisters and I always knew Grandma had heart problems and couldn't do anything hard, but we did know she would do anything to spend more time with us. Whether it was wanders around the block or walks to the library, Grandma was there by our side.

When I was going into sixth grade, we were told that Grandma only had 2% heart function. Her heart wasn't benefiting her anymore, but she found out that there was a way to live longer: an IVAD. It is a heart pump (起搏器)that replaces the heart, basically, a battery instead of a heart and it's connected to a battery pack by a tube that conies out of the side. Grandma would become a robot with no heart! The Toledo Hospital, the only hospital near us that could do this surgery, offered to do it for Grandma. She, obviously, agreed.

The grey morning of the surgery was rough for our family, as we woke up bright and early to drive to the hospital. That car ride left me with worried thoughts racing through my mind: Will Grandma be okay? Will we ever take another walk around the block?

When we arrived at the hospital, we knew exactly where to go, as we'd been there many times before. After going through those familiar doors and up the stairs, my mom and I walked up to the nurses' desk and asked for Grandma.

“Oh, Mary?” A nurse answered. "She's one of the nicest patients we've had." Then she directed us to the waiting room and told us that only two of us were permitted to go into the ward (病房)at a time to say goodbye to Grandma before she went in for surgery.

She pulled back on the ropes, making the homemade swing (秋千) fly higher and closer to the leafy branches of the tall tree. The wind blew cool against her cheeks. She was five years old, and, at that moment, being mad at her eleven-year-old brother, David.

“How could he have been so mean?” she asked herself, remembering how he had made a face and called her a “big baby” at the breakfast table. “He hates me,” she thought, “just because I took the last cake out from under his nose. He hates me!”

The swing carried her up so high that she could see for miles. It was fun looking down at the farmyard below. Her red sweater flashed brightly in the morning sunlight. She stopped thinking about being mad at her brother and started to sing a swinging song.

On a distant hill behind the swing, a huge bull (公牛) with long, sharp horns (角) and big, heavy hooves (牛蹄) watched the red sweater flashing in the sunlight. The bull had broken out of his grassland. He was in a bad mood and ready to rush at anything that moved. Then he lowered his massive head and began moving across the field toward the red sweater he saw swinging back and forth beneath the tall tree.

Meanwhile, David was in the barnyard (仓院), feeding the chickens. He looked out and saw his little sister on the swing. “Sisters are a pain in the neck,” he thought. Then suddenly he saw the bull rushing across the field, heading straight for his sister. Without a second thought, David screamed as loudly as he could, “Look out behind you! Get out of there! Run!”
