Standing on the top story of Basantapur Palace in Nepal, Yuan Mengxi is having a hard time relating today’s reality with【小题1】she saw seven years ago.

The palace complex, 【小题2】(locate) in the middle of Durbar Square in the country’s capital Kathmandu, was badly damaged in【小题3】massive earthquake in April 2015. The 9-storeyed       palace, a tourist landmark, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

The palace not only has great【小题4】 (history) significance, but is also an architectural feat (功绩). “ You can see the whole place from here, and everything is beautiful and【小题5】order,” says Yuan, a 33-year-old originally from Zhengzhou, the capital of Central China’s Henan province. She is 【小题6】 (current) working for the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage and is in charge of a team sent【小题7】 (rebuild) the palace.

She says she was in shock【小题8】 (see) the city after the quake at the time. Heritage buildings in Durbar Square【小题9】 (destroy), with wooden statues buried and spread over a wide area.“ Kathmandu Valley was still covered in the dust from the quake,” she recalls.

After the earthquake, both the Chinese and Nepali governments agreed to launch a project【小题10】 (aim) at restoring the nine-storeyed Basantapur Palace complex.

The digital protection project of the Mati Temple Grottoes (石窟) in Zhangye city, Northwest China’s Gansu Province, 【小题1】 (complete) so far, according to local researchers. First built around 1,600 years ago along the route of the ancient Silk Road, the Grottoes are famous for Buddhist relics (遗迹) in more than 70 caves, 【小题2】 (make) one of the top three Hexi Buddhism culture grottoes in China, with the 【小题3】 (value) position of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang and Yulin Grottoes in Anxi.

The project was launched last June, with 【小题4】 total investment of 3.89 million yuan (about $530,000), 【小题5】 (include) data collection for the surrounding environment of the grottoes, digital scanning of the sculptures 【小题6】 (preserve) in primary caves. Digital technology is a new approach 【小题7】 preserving cultural relics and will take the lead in a new era for future exhibitions.

The work is focused on one of the site’s major attractions called the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, 【小题8】 have eight caves that are among the best-preserved in the whole site, said Yao Guilan, 【小题9】 (direct) of the institute for cultural heritage preservation in Zhangye.

To preserve the site better, funds have been raised 【小题10】 an archaeological (考古的) research containing experts at home and abroad is also underway.
