Failure is probably the most exhausting experience one ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding. We experience this tiredness in two ways: start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue.

In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it is either too boring or too difficult. 【小题1】 Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first. 【小题2】 Using my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (字母) order and I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.

【小题3】 Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that we fail again and again. Years ago, when planning Encyclopedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its article. Nothing like this had ever been done before and none of the solutions that I came up with worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable. Mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why the problems cannot be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. 【小题4】 An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind and proved correct at every step.

【小题5】 Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing. Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.

A.This feeling finally weighed me down.
B.Hard as I worked as before, I felt no fatigue.
C.Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle.
D.And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.
E.Feeling relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
F.I once was asked to write 102 essays on some famous authors.
G.I racked my brains day and night and wrote the essays desperately.

When I was young, I wished for a good car and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years, my mind was planning this beautiful future.
Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go . Death had never touched me so closely.
After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.
Enjoying life's precious quirks ( 偶发事件) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn't content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.
I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.” It’s a sentence that we have all heard many, many times, and it might even seem old-fashioned and cliched (老生常谈)to you. But this sentence essentially symbolizes the virtue of perseverance-never giving up.

It’s a common phrase coming from the mouths of parents, teachers and coaches. Why? It is because we have the tendency to give up trying after numerous attempts resulting in failure. Achieving the seemingly impossible is always tough but we should keep in mind that every step we take is a step closer to maturity and success. In the process of striving to achieve, we reflect, learn and gain self-understanding, the pride and accomplishment of having completed our tasks.

Never give up, try and try again.

Here is a model demonstrating the virtue of perseverance. Thomas Edison, the great inventor of the bulb, carried out literally thousands of experiments to find out which type of material was suitable for making the filament (灯丝)of a light bulb. Thousands of different materials were tested. There were thousands of consecutive(连续不断的)failures, but Edison refused to give up. At last he succeeded, and created one of the most important inventions in history. Had he given up, we would still be living in darkness.

I also have personal experience of the importance of perseverance. When I was in Grade 6 of primary school, I joined a course that required a lot of physical endurance and ability. As I was not an athletic person then, I thought it was a big challenge and that I’d never complete all of the tasks. I just wanted to give up trying, but I told myself to persevere. Somewhat miraculously, I completed the entire course. I knew that I wasn’t as weak as I had thought, and that sense of jubilation (欢)is utterly invaluable.

Never give up. Life is like tossing a coin-you either get heads, or tails. There is equal chance of getting either side of it. Even if you toss tails for 99 times, there is still a chance of getting heads for the 100th time. The important thing is to try.

Would you give up if you failed an examination twice? Would you give up after losing your future? Would you give up if you felt like life had lost all its meaning? If you answer no to those questions, congratulations. Life is not hopeless, and with enough perseverance and determination, you will succeed. Continue tossing the coin of life, and never give up.
