An American in Beijing lives his Chinese dream

Gao Tianrui walks along streets in Beijing’s Xicheng district as 【小题1】 public security volunteer.【小题2】 (wear) his bright red armband (红袖章) and speaking fluent Mandarin, 62-year-old Gao Tianrui could 【小题3】 (take) for any regular Chinese man. But on 【小题4】 (close) inspection, things are not quite 【小题5】 they seem: Gao’s real name is Terry Crossman and he is from the United States. He is now a member of “Xicheng Dama”, that is, volunteers, usually women in late middle-age,【小题6】 walk along the streets of downtown Beijing’s Xicheng district. Terry said that, at first, he saw the group as busybodies, but 【小题7】 (gradual) he saw that it was a good thing for retired seniors 【小题8】 (help) others.

He is often seen giving tourists 【小题9】 (direction), getting water for a baby and even helping a neighbor sell yogurt. “I like helping others,” he said, “I live in the hutong and my neighbors and I usually help each other ... This is where I live, where my friends are and where I call home.” Crossman 【小题10】 (become) interested in Chinese culture as a teenager when he read Tao Te Ching by Laozi.

I graduated from the Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine in 1994, and 【小题1】 (work) in orthopedics(骨科) for 26 years by the time I took part in 【小题2】 Chinese Medical Volunteers tour in Yushu, Qinghai province in August 2020.

Then, I used Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) to treat a variety of health problems, including severe pains, blood pressure issue and kneed 【小题3】 (injure). These conditions are 【小题4】 (primary) caused by the local people’s herding practice and the tough environment 【小题5】 they live, and are also associated with some of their unhealthy living habits.

TCM methods can only relieve the pain for a short time, and sometimes they are unable to address the fundamental causes. So, I suggested that Chinese Medical Volunteers perform surgeries locally 【小题6】 bring the patients to better developed regions. We successfully completed surgeries on 21 patients. One surgery had to 【小题7】   (cancel) because the patient had severe heart failure.

As the head of the surgical team, I was 【小题8】 a lot of pressure because we were responsible for ensuring the safety of every patient, 【小题9】 (rid) them of their pain and improving their quality of life. Another goal of our action was 【小题10】 (provide) local medical workers with hands-on training, so local villagers would still be able to access quality treatment conveniently after we left.
