Many have had the same thought as Shannon St. Onge when looking at the approach of snow on a weather forecast—that they have time to finish their jobs. As the director of finance at the First Nations University of Canada, she had to drive 25 kilometers from her home to the city of Regina to attend an important meeting.

As she was leaving, the winter snow began to fall. Taking a dirt road for better traction (牵引) on her tires, she quickly became lost, with no ability to see the edge of the road from a rolled-down window. After a while she stopped and called 911.

“The operator took my information and told me to wait out the storm as my tank was full and I was warm. I waited almost 14 hours and nobody has called me yet to check in,” she wrote in a Face-book post.

“Would the gas tank last until morning? What if I was hit by another vehicle? What if I didn’t make it home at all?” St. Onge wondered.

Determined to ensure the safest end, she went out in the storm and discovered her location on a road sign, and then found a neighborhood Facebook group for the area she was passing through—warning others of her plight through a Google Maps pin.

That was when 80-year-old Andre Bouvier Sr., a retired rescuer, got a call about St. Onge’s situation. He went out to find her, on foot, since he couldn’t manage to start his tractor.

On the way he found three other stranded (被困) vehicles. He walked the quarter mile there and back, and led the helpless cars one by one to his home. Bouvier let the survivors sleep at his house, where they ate and laughed, and departed the next morning after he had cleaned the driveway.

Gym class was not considered important at the private school I attended from kindergarten to Grade 6 and the words "movement skill development" would have caused brows to wrinkle.

For Grades 7 and 8 I moved into the public school system. It was the early 1980s and we had to wear green gym shorts and white T-shirts with the school crest(饰章)on them. We had to climb ropes. We had to go for long runs in the valley beside the school and excuses were not allowed.

That was where my memories from junior high gym class ended.

The next year I went to the first day of Grade 9 gym with a positive outlook, high hopes, and good intentions. But all I ended up developing was the habit of hiding in the girls' bathroom for the duration of the class.

When my counsellor(辅导员) called a meeting between me and the gym teacher later that year, I remember the teacher looking at me and saying, "I wouldn't know this girl was in my class if I hit her with my car."

It’s not unusual for kids to change friends, change schools, or change the way they dress as they’re growing up. But what about changing into a giant (巨大的) red panda? That’s the life of a 13-year-old girl named Mei Lee, the perfectly imperfect main character of Disney and Pixar’s new film, Turning Red.

Turning Red tells a coming-of-age story like no other. Mel is a Chinese Canadian girl who turns into a giant red panda anytime she experiences strong emotions, and must find a way to manage both her school life and home life in early 2000s Toronto, Canada. Mel tries to deal with hanging out with her three best friends, the boy band they like and her protective mother, who isn’t ready to let go of her growing daughter.

“Turning Red is inspired by the difficulties of growing up and trying to find out how to honor your parents, but also stay true to yourself,” said director Domee Shi. “For Mei Lee in the movie, before becoming the red panda, she thinks she has it all figured out, like we all did before we woke up one day and realized all of a sudden, we’re covered in body hair, our feelings are all over the place, and we’re hungry all the time.

Turning Red describes the complexities (难题) of mother-daughter relationships well. In fact, the real-life experiences of the film’s crew (摄制组成员) inspired several scenes. To make her crew share more about their childhood, Shi created a video at the office with her team. She encouraged everyone to look back to the past and bring out their embarrassing teen pictures and memories. It worked! “The crew started bringing in their old middle school yearbooks,” said producer Lindsey Collins. “They shared stories of their funny moments in middle school. Also, those of us who are parents shared our bad parenting moments. It’s meaningful. As a team, we just really tried to be real with one another about our daily failures and our daily successes.” It seems that however old you are, there is a little bit of Mei in all of us.

One day in summer, little Jack was playing on the beach with his father. Suddenly, he saw a little tortoise moving slowly on the sand.
