Glasses are something so simple and __________ here in America. Therefore, we may easily fail to see the __________ they made to people who have no access to them.

We are not doctor, and there were people we could not __________. But for those we could, we watched as their lives changed. I returned from this __________ trip with so much more than I took with me to give. What a(n) __________ our sight is--and what a difference being able to see clearly makes.

Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future and wanted to make a ______ in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I ______ the Lighthouse Project.

I started my ______ as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to ______ among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for ______. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria.

After completing my ______, I was sent to the village that was small and ______ in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they ______ their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I ______ in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes thought I learned more from my ______ than they did from me.

Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not ______ anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my ______ forever.

On June 24, 1853, near Solferino, fighting broke out in a battle that produced heavy casualties (伤亡). Thousands of ________ soldiers lined the streets. That night, Henry Dunant arrived in Solferino. He walked up the road to the main church, the Chiesa Maggiore, and was greeted by the ________ of pain from wounded soldiers.

________ by the horrors, Dunant began attending the soldiers. Not having received ________ training before, he was taught to clean wounds and apply bandages (绷带). There were French ________ as well as Austrian ones. Some of the latter, suspicious (疑心的) of the ________ they received, tore bandages from their wounds. In 1863, having read Dunant’s book, Gustave Moynier, the president of the Public Welfare Association of Geneva, contacted Dunant about working towards the ________.
