All parents have sky-high hopes for their children. We want them to be confident and satisfied. What can parents do to help their kids grow up to lead happy lives? Experts advise:

【小题1】. A study found that students whose parents paid attention to their abilities were far more likely to do well in school-and in life-than students whose parents didn’t show such support. So celebrate your kids’ achievements, no matter how small they are.

Praise their efforts. 【小题2】. Still, they are praised for trying their best. Ten-year-old April Cutler, for example, has had trouble with math since the second grade. “She usually gets C’s on her report card, but last year she was determined to get A’s and worked hard at it,” says her mom. “When the first grading period ended, April was disappointed when she got a B in math,” Lueille continues. “But my husband and I told her we were very proud that she’d improved. That inspired her to try even harder. 【小题3】.”

Let them make decisions and mistakes. 【小题4】. And allowing kids to make wrong decisions-so long as doing so won’t harm them-helps kids learn from their mistakes.

Acceptance Speeches

‘Thank you’ is a very polite thing to say when you are given something, and this is particularly important when receiving an award at a ceremony. But if you’re one of the lucky winners, ‘thank you’ is just the start of the most important acceptance speech of your life.

Film, TV and music award ceremonies are all about the acceptance speeches — they are an art form in their own right. They are a chance for an actor or performer to publicly thank people who’ve helped them.

Speeches are also used as a platform to make a political statement or just to raise someone’s profile (形象) — so it’s important to get the words right. 【小题1】 For example, at this year’s Oscars, nominees (被提名者) have only 90 seconds from finding out they’ve won to finishing their speech. John Bailey, president of the Academy, has told them they should “get up there and keep speeches brief.”

When the clock is ticking, it’s hard to say everything you want. Weeping can waste time; bumbling (结结巴巴讲话) costs valuable seconds. 【小题2】 At the 2019 Golden Globes, Olivia Colman was named the best actress for her role as Queen Anne in The Favorite and gave an excited speech that ended with her holding up her trophy (奖杯) and sending a message to her family: “Ed and the kids-look! You would expect an actor to be persuasive and able to perform on stage in front of an audience. 【小题3】When Japan’s Naomi Osaka won this year’s Australian Open final, she said “Sorry, public speaking isn’t my strong point so I hope I can get through this... I read notes before this but I still forgot what I was meant to say.”

【小题4】 It’s important to make notes that remind you to thank people, say some words of wisdom, and win over the audience. But if you’ve got nothing to say, accept your award graciously then get off stage before the music starts playing again — just remember to say “thank you”!

Most of us don’t like to think too much about rubbish.【小题1】. However, household waste is a major contributor to our planet’s waste problem. Like it or not, it needs to be managed if we are to have a brighter green future.

When it comes to being responsible for our own rubbish, the best way to approach it is by following the three golden rules of waste management, or the ‘3 Rs’-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

“The order is important.【小题2】 ,” says Eugene Tay, Director of Green Future Solutions in Singapore. “Recycling still affects the environment and should be done last after reduce and reuse.”

But, when our efforts to reduce and reuse still result in an overflowing rubbish bin, the advantages of recycling cannot be ignored. “【小题3】,” says Amy Ho, Managing Director of World Wide Fund For Nature in Singapore. “The damage to our environment could then be slowed down as a result. ”

Recycling is so important that we really have no excuse not to do the simplest of household tasks that will make a difference.
