“Little boy, will you help an old man up the hill with his load?” These words were spoken by an old gray-headed man, who was drawing a hand-cart with a bag of corn in it.

“I can’t. I am in a hurry,” said Hanson, the boy addressed, who was hurrying to get to the schoolyard, so that he might play with the boys before school began.

The old man sat down on a stone at the foot of the hill, to rest himself and gather strength for the ascent (上坡). He stared after Hanson, and sighed as he thought of the days of his youth, now far back in the past. A tear was beginning to gather in his eye, when another little boy, John Wilson, came up to him and said, “Shall I help you up the hill with your load?”

The old man brushed his eyes with the sleeve of his coat, and replied, “I shall be very glad to have your help.” He then stood up, took the handle of his cart, and pulled with all his strength, while John pushed behind.

When they reached the top of the hill, John discovered a hole in the bag on the under side, from which the corn was dropping out. Putting forth all his strength, he turned the bag, so that there might be no further loss of corn.

“Thank you very much,” said the old man, as John set out upon a run for his school-house; “and may God reward you.” But John was out of hearing before the last words were spoken.

When John reached the school-house, he was about ten minutes late, for which he received a mark (违纪记录). This was a very unusual thing for him, as he was remarkable for never being late. If he had told the headmaster what had delayed him, he would have been excused; but he thought it would look a little like boasting to do so. So he took the mark without saying a word.

One day, my elder brother and I were coming back from the islands where we often risked going with other fishermen. All at once, the sky over our heads was covered, with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm. Strangely, it seemed that the storm struck us only. I could clearly see that the sun shone brightly in the area not far away.

With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool (旋涡). Other fishermen were in a very distant area without noticing what we were experiencing. We shouted for help but in vain. We were hopeless. Nothing could save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool. It may appear strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it. I began to think how amazing a thing it was lo die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature. Suddenly, we went over the edge. I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe.

The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed. I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool- trees and barrels (桶子). After a while, I became curious about the whirlpool itself. I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly.

I went to a grocery store for candy that afternoon. Honestly speaking, it was out of my way and out of the circle that I lived my life within. But it was meant for me to be there at this particular time.

After selecting my items, I went to the checkout line. I noticed a young woman in the line in front of me. Her clothes were worn out, and she looked so tired. She had a toddler (学步儿童) who could not have been more than three and a newborn who was just a few weeks old. The toddler was running and jumping around just like toddlers do. The baby was crying. My heart went out to her. I had been in her shoes with my own two sons.

She managed to get her groceries on the conveyor belt during all the chaos of her kids, and the clerk started checking out her items. As I stood behind her, I noticed that she was losing patience with her kids but didn’t know what to do. She was trying to balance both tasks without causing a huge disruption.

The line behind me continued to snake its way into an aisle (过道). The pressure was growing. As I watched her, I realized that the young woman was looking at a few items and trying to decide what she needed to put back. The people in line behind me were getting impatient and annoyed that she was holding them up even more now. The dancing toddler and screaming baby just added to the stress of her situation.

I touched her on the arm and asked her a simple question, ”Honey, do you need these items for your children?“

”Yes, ma’am, but I don’t have enough on my card to pay for them. I need them for Thanksgiving.“ My heart broke for this mama. ”Ring up those groceries for her,“ I said to the clerk. ”What?“ the clerk asked.

The Grocery Store Trip

My two-year-old daughter was playing with a toy bear in a pile of groceries (食品杂货) in my shopping cart. Shopping once a month was a wonderful family time. Every time I would buy over $200 worth of groceries.

A well-dressed gentleman stood behind me with three items (商品). He looked up at his watch anxiously, and smiled at me. Obviously he was pressed for time. I felt for the man as he’d be behind me for a good long time.

“Why don’t you go ahead of me?” I said pulling the cart backwards. “You only have a couple of items.” “Thank you,” he replied appreciatively, stepping ahead of me. My daughter gave him a big smile. “Hello,” she said in her sweetest voice. “Hello,” he replied, with his face lighting up with pleasure. I put his few items ahead of mine to let him check out first.

I was just waiting for checkout when I realized my husband hadn’t returned my bankcard. I hurriedly searched my wallet. My heart dropped. The gentleman in front had paid and was picking up his groceries.

“I’ve forgotten my bank card, will you take a credit card?” I asked the cashier (收银员) hopefully. “I’m sorry. We only accept the bank card or money,” the cashier replied. “It will take me an hour to run home and an hour back.” I was discouraged. All my careful planning hadn’t helped. The hour and a half of shopping left me tired and I wasn’t sure how my daughter would deal with another two hours in the car.
