I was a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.

Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had shown me how to knit a scarf. She showed me stitches and gave me her half done project.

I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (纱线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it’s freezing outside!” then he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

People often talk about the “walls” that some individuals build around themselves. I was one of those individuals. Long after I divorced and became a single parent, I still wore my wedding ring. Maybe it was because I didn’t want anyone to know that I had failed at something in my life. Wearing that ring helped me pretend that everything was okay.

You think that people can’t see through those kinds of walls. But they do. They just know enough not to let you know that they see you are pretending. One day at work, however, pretending didn’t come that easily. I was on my coffee break with colleagues. Then my cell phone rang and the garage boss told me loudly the car repairs would come to $850. I looked worried. I needed that car to hold down my present job. Without it, I would have to walk fourteen miles to and from work in North Bay. I felt sick. I didn’t have a credit card, and I certainly couldn’t call the $28 in my bank account “savings”. But every problem has a solution, and in my case that meant I had to ask someone else for something—even if it was only a lift downtown after work. Luckily, my colleague Jane volunteered to give me a ride to the garage after work.

I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to come up with bright ideas about how to pay my garage bill. I figured I could borrow $200 from my mom and pay her back at a rate of $2.50 a week. I thought of what I had at home that I could live without and therefore sell. I finally decided the best I could do was to offer to type up invoices (发票) for the garage.

On the first day of school, Tina’ s teacher told the class, “Everyone of you will have a turn to be the Terrific (极好的) Kid of the Day!”

All year, Terrific Kids celebrated their special days in special ways, but Tina hoped her turn would never come.

When Ben was the Terrific Kid, his aunt Sarah taught the class how to draw funny cartoon faces. Tina didn’t have aunts. When Ken was the Terrific Kid, his twin baby sisters came to school. Tina didn’t have sisters or brothers. When Curtis’s turn arrived, his family came to school. Curtis’s mom baked cakes. Curtis’s father was a gardener and gave every child a plant. Curtis’s grandmother taught the class a song. Tina didn’t have a dad or grandmother.

After school that day, Tina walked to the library for Story Hour. Mrs. Kaplan, the children’s librarian, greeted Tina with a bright smile. “Today’s story is about your favorite animal, Tina!”

A dog story! Tina loved dogs, but wasn’t allowed to have pets.

“Will you work the puppet (手偶) while I read the story?” Mrs. Kaplan asked Tina.

The little black and white dog puppet felt soft. Tina liked it so much. So when Mrs. Kaplan read Tina’s favorite dog story, Tina moved the dog puppet alongside.

After Story Hour, Tina waited until 7: 00 for her mom to pick her up. That night, Tina kept thinking about being a Terrific Kid. “I hope my turn never comes,” Tina thought.

Sure enough, Tina’s turn came. When she told Mrs. Kaplan that the next day was her turn to be the Terrific Kid, she had tears in her eyes. When Tina’s mom arrived, Mrs. Kaplan asked her into her office to chat while Tina waited.

On the way home, Tina and her mom stopped at Tico Tony’s for hot dogs. Tico Tony noticed Tina’s sad face. “Hey, Tina! What’s up?” Tico Tony listened while Tina told him about her Terrific Kid day. “We think you’re a Terrific Kid.” He smiled and, winked (眨眼示意) knowingly at her mother.

That night, Tina’s mom stayed up late baking cookies.

Then, the day arrived. Tina walked slowly to school with her mom. Her Terrific Kid day wouldn’t be terrific-just cookies.
