In dreaming up the programme Tennis and Literacy for Youth, as a mother, I had hoped to share two of my passions, tennis and reading, with children. Throughout the year, I had advertised for participants at local elementary schools and volunteers at local high schools. With the help of kind people, I applied for money. I was even able to secure a camp site for the programme.

But on the first day of camp, in spite of my careful planning, things did not go the way I had hoped. Hector and Adrian exchanged blows with their racquets (球拍). Hector struggled to his feet moments later, covering a bloody nose with one hand. Georgie and Eduardo threw balls at each other. Then during the reading time, I raced from joyless child to demanding child, unable to convince even one to open a book. They would rather be watching Nickelodeon at home, Mylea told me, than “learning stupid tennis and reading boring books”.

That evening, exhausted as I was, I called my volunteers together for a meeting, and redesigned the entire curriculum. We created a good fellow system, where each volunteer paired with a camper to help him or her during reading time. To emphasize praise and progress, we established weekly prize ceremonies, presenting awards for most improved reading, tennis and behavior.

In the following days, with the chaos and the schedule changes and the meetings, these children, once in bad mood during reading time, untouched books in their laps, began to find joy in reading a story and playing tennis.

One day, Mylea shut the book and asked me, “Can I take this to read it to my mom tonight?” Looking up at her eager face, I couldn’t help myself. I jumped to my feet and wrapped her in a hug, lifting her right off the ground. “It’s all yours!” I overjoyed.

You can't buy your 10-year-old daughter a smart phone because you are scared of her becoming a social outcast. Sometimes as the parent, you have to make the hard decisions and be the backbone. But you need to be confident in your decision, and to do that you have to think it through and discuss it.

It's possible for children to have smart phones and not become addicted, which means they can use theirs smartphones reasonably. They can have one and also read a lot and even play outside. It's not black or white. You may ask me what I would do as a parent. I have never been addicted to technology, but I don't refuse it. I haven't and wouldn't buy my daughter a smartphone, but I have given her my old ones with rules attached. And it's important for parent to understand their children's phones and how they work. But parental decisions made with no discussion don't harvest respect and understanding, only hostility. And there will be the seeds of anger later .

It's interesting that you see the smartphone as more of an issue than social media. I am the opposite. A smartphone can be an amazing tool to help your children communicate with others and discover new things , but it can also become a tool that brings school life and its problems home. That's what I would oppose most because we all need switch-off time. Think of some rules for using smartphones, but they need to be discussed and work for you. For example, no phones upstairs, minimal use at home,no social media sites, or only certain, no independent app-buying,etc. A smartphone shouldn't be a byword for"do what you want".

This will be the first of many things your daughter feels passionate(热情的) about and you may not agree with. She needs to listen to you and you also need to listen to her. As an adult, you are in charge and are supposed to build a good relationship with her. And it's your job to take the long view at times when her vision can see only what's right in front of her.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Education said they would “pay more attention to cultivating students’ masculinity (阳刚之气)” through enhancing physical education and psychological direction for students.

This proposal received widespread public support, according to a recent study released by China Youth Daily. Among the 1,519 participants, 85.5 percent agreed that Chinese youths should be taught to be more masculine.

Feng Yaowei (not his real name), a teacher in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, said that cultivating masculinity among students is necessary. As many young people are brought up by overprotective parents, when faced with obstacles, they are more likely to give up rather than work to overcome them. “Cultivating masculinity can help students develop a strong will,” Feng told China Youth Daily.

For Xu Chenchen (not her real name), a Senior 2 student from Hangzhou, masculinity means having a sense of duty, rather than referring to a certain appearance or manner of dress. “This is a quality that every teenager should have, no matter their gender,” Xu told China Youth Daily.

This is best illustrated by Song Jiarui, a female student at China West Normal University. In 2018, the 20-year-old girl cut her long hair and joined the army. Every day, she got out of bed early and started a 10-kilometer exercise routine that involved climbing and running.

“It’s challenging, but women can be strong and tough as well,” Song told Tencent News. “My efforts will never end,” she added, explaining that she will return to the army after graduation. “As a female, I will try my best to work for justice and a peaceful world.”

“There is nothing wrong with men being caring and emotionally expressive – qualities considered to be feminine (女性化的), and women can also benefit from being courageous and rational (理性的),” Shen Yifei, a sociologist at Fudan University, whose research focuses on gender, told CGTN. “Good personal qualities have nothing to do with the sexes.”

B.Women are better than men in some aspects.

【小题4】What can we infer from Shen Yifei’s words?

C.Both genders have their own personality advantages.
D.Feminine qualities involve being caring and rational.
