The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt showed a red striped nightclothes underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he wore a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing something on the blackboard. Mohi said in very low voice, “Sorry, teacher,” and went to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly faded.

Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his strange appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.

Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would call his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.

The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed peered (窥视) in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played so flawlessly that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly.

Sarah couldn’t really remember when she and Laura became best friends. But they had been really close. They had lunch together in the school cafeteria, they went to the same book club, and they even had parties in each other’s house several times. As a matter of fact, the two girls had quite different personalities. Sarah was always confident and straightforward. In comparison, Laura was a bit quiet, but she was definitely the sweetest person Sarah had known.

On the first day of the new semester, Sarah couldn’t wait to meet Laura and tell her everything about her summer vacation. However, the moment she saw Laura enter the classroom, she was surprised. What could have happened to Laura? Why did she gain so much weight? Sarah knew it would be inappropriate if she raised the questions but she couldn’t resist the curiosity. “Since we are best friends, she knows I don’t mean any harm,” she thought. Thus, she asked, “Why did you get so fat?”

The instant Sarah said it, she realized she had made a mistake. People standing by began to laugh and point. Poor Laura, apparently shocked and offended by the question, stood still, tears welling up in her eyes. When she came to herself, she ran out of the classroom.

The next few days was very hard for Sarah. Whenever she reached out to Laura, Laura would walk away on purpose or pretended that she hadn’t seen Sarah. At first, Sarah was truly sorry for hurting Laura’s feelings. But as she tried several times in vain to make up with Laura, Sarah became angry. “Enough is enough,” she thought. However, Sarah couldn’t help feeling regretful because deep down she knew it was her fault.

Cornelia was admitted to Class I. But soon Mom discovered most children did not like to play with her daughter. They said she bossed them around and made them cry.

Everyone in her class admitted Cornelia was very intelligent. But she had no friends until Daisy joined her class. New to the city and too shy to make any friends, she did not mind being taken under Cornelia's wing. At least she had someone to play with.

One day, the teacher punished Daisy for doing her sums without thinking. The little girl cried because the whole class had laughed at her. Cornelia told Mom about Daisy crying in class "Why don't you try to explain to her simply?" asked Mom.

"Mummy, I don't have time to waste." protested Cornelia. At this, Mom decided to tell Cornelia a story. "One day an ant fell into a stream and was struggling to save herself. A pigeon sitting on a tree pulled a leaf and let it fall into the stream close to the ant. The ant climbed onto it and floated safely to the bank. A little later, a bird-catcher came, preparing to throw a net over the pigeon. The ant saw this and bit him in the foot. The bird-catcher yelled out in pain, whose noise made the pigeon fly away. You see, a good turn deserves another."

Something flashed in Cornelia's mind and touched her heart. She knew what to do next. And soon afterwards, Daisy understood the sums and was praised by the teacher.

One day, Cornelia made a serious mistake and as a punishment, she had to stay back for two hours after school and pick up the waste paper from each classroom.

Getting It Right

On the April morning I found out about Lucy’s mother—Mrs. Hastings, it rained. A light, cooling sprinkle of tears that grayed the Texas sky. I didn’t know what kind of cancer Mrs. Hastings had until later, but I knew her condition was serious—very serious.

I love Mr. and Mrs. Hastings almost as much as I love my own parents, and Lucy is my best friend. But I didn’t want to go to school that day. And I sure didn’t want to see Lucy.

What could I possibly say to her? What do people say to their friends at such a time? I tried every trick I knew to get out of going to school. But Mom insisted.

“You have a history test this morning, Kristin,“ she said, looking at me as if she’d crawled into my mind and knew I was just making excuses. Then she smiled. “Be sure to stay close to Lucy, especially today, because that poor girl is going to need your strength.

Strength? What was Mother talking about? I had no strength. I didn’t even know what to say to my best friend. I hid out in the choir room between classes in hopes of avoiding Lucy, but she was never out of my thoughts. I kept trying to come up with something appropriate to say to her because I really wanted to get it right.

Lucy and I had last- period English in Mrs.Green’s room. I’d avoided her all day, I was going to have to face her last period, and I still didn’t have a plan. However, I worried needlessly because Lucy never showed up for class. When English class was over, Mrs. Green said, ”Kristin, Lucy Hastings is your best friend, and she is coming here in a few minutes to get her lesson assignments."

My heart tightened into a hard knot and I trembled inwardly. I still didn’t know what to say to Lucy, and time was running out.

I ran out of the classroom, racing down the hall and out the front door of school.
