Born into slavery in Georgia in 1848, Susan Baker King Taylor went to live with her free grandmother in Savannah where her _____ education by teachers and tutors disobeyed laws banning _____ education for African Americans.

After _____ slavery, she joined hundreds of enslaved refugees (难民) at Union­occupied St. Simons Island. When she was just 14 years old, she became the first Black teacher to _____ educate African Americans in Georgia.

She married Edward King, a Black officer. When she wasn't working as a nurse, she _____ soldiers to read and write and“...learned to _____ a musket (火枪) very well...and could shoot _____ and often hit the target,” she wrote.

While working as a nurse at a hospital for African American _____ in Beaumont, South Carolina, she met and _____ Clara Barton, the pioneering nurse who would ______ the American Red Cross. After the war, Taylor and her husband moved to Savannah and opened a ______ for African American children in 1866. In April 1952, I was 11 years old and in the sixth grade at an elementary school. My teacher was Miss Pemberton. It was spelling bee time in our city - students were issued with brochures of words to study in     _____ for the class spelldowns (比赛). They would lead to a schoolwide contest and ________ qualification for the citywide spelling bee, where school ________ competed for the ________ of being the spelling champion of Houston.
