In an exhibition at the National Railway Museum in York, England, Lin Qi, a 26-year-old assistant project manager, is featured as one of the “railway heroes” who helped key workers to move around the country during the pandemic(疫情). Qi is part of a team working on High-Speed 2, known as HS2, a low-carbon railway that will eventually connect some of the UK’s biggest cities using trains that can travel up to 224 miles per hour.

“The happiest thing for me is getting to see a design on paper become a physical project,” Qi tells the reporters. With HS2, she says she also enjoys working on a project that is bringing new opportunities and creating new jobs.

Born in Zhuzhou, Hunan province in China, Qi moved to the UK when she was three years old. Qi studied architecture at university before taking a job with an engineering company. Architecture is designing buildings. Qi says that in her job she feels excited about connecting people and that trains and railways are an important part of that.

Engineering uses science and maths to build machines and other structures, such as bridges, buildings and railways. “Males have been playing the leading role in these fields but this is changing fast,” says Qi. On 23 June, International Women in Engineering Day celebrates the work women are doing with big projects such as HS2. This year’s theme is “engineering heroes”.

On being selected to take part in the exhibition. Qi said, "It was an honor to be asked to take part and I hope to inspire more young people, particularly women, to consider a career in the construction and engineering industry".

For anyone wanting to follow a similar career. Qi advises, “have a goal in mind but be open-minded and flexible.” She says that five years ago she wouldn’t have imagined that she would be working in this sort of job. However, she says, “there is a lot of opportunity in engineering, not just for women but for everyone. I look forward to new challenges. ”

Simon Russell, project director for the Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy Joint Venture, said, "Qi is part of a generation of bright and confident young people that are building their careers on this exciting project. She’s an excellent role model and we’re hugely proud of her achievements to date. "

The GREATEST Journey

I had lunch last week with a high-ranking business woman for a fortune 500 company. I asked her what tips she would give to someone early in their career. Without hesitation she jumped right into four keys to her professional climb:
Know your business. Never get satisfaction with your industry or your position. In most cases, the knowledge you hold now is not good enough to stand the test of time. Thus, you must keep working to stay on top of what’s new and what’s coming down the pipeline. This is what really counts, especially early in a professional career, as many entry level associates are content to be gainfully employed.
Pick careers with care. Again, early in your career it is easy to run after the job that offers the most money. In the case of a life-long career money cannot answer all things. If you are going to be an entrepreneur then you’ll probably start with a budget of zero. Yet, if you have the discipline, working for yourself could be the best choice you’ve ever made.
If you are going to work for a company you have to do your homework. If you find a company that consists with your values and produces a product that you 100% believe in, then you’ll have an easy time giving that organization your all.
Be personable. If everyone hates to be around you at the office, it’s time to check your attitude. We’ve all heard at least one anecdote about a great thinker with great skills who drove coworkers crazy. Someway, somehow many of the brightest and best lack the “people skills” to advance beyond an entry-level position.
In short, you must have the interpersonal insight to interact with internal and external contacts. If not, you may find that you are unimportant once someone with soft-skills joins the organization. Why? People have to buy you before they ever buy the product you’re selling.
Be willing to move. This is where I got puzzled. She shared how she lived in seven states still working for the same organization.
Much is made of moving in today’s attempts to climb the corporate ladder. As more and more companies extend to have a global reach, it is easy to understand why new opportunities birth in various locations.
Whatever the path, outline in your heart what destination you hope to reach and this will be a key indicator as to which journey will be greatest for you.

Choosing a major, which is the specialized area of your college study, can be overwhelming. But have no fear! Your choice of major will not lock you into a specific career for the rest of your life. And the major you choose will neither predict nor guarantee your future. Consider these factors when picking your major.

Career Prep

Choose a major because it will prepare you for a specific career path or advanced study. Maybe you already know that you want to be a nurse, a day trader, or a web developer. Before you declare, take a class or two in the relevant discipline, check out the syllabus for an advanced seminar, and talk to students in the department of your choice. Make sure you’re ready for the coursework required for the career of your dreams.

Earning Potential

Future   earning   potential   is   worth   considering—college   is   a   big     investment,     and while college can pay you back in many ways beyond salary, this can be a major factor for students who are paying their own way or taking out loans. According to PayScale.com, the majors that lead to the highest salaries include just about any type of engineering, actuarial mathematics, computer science, physics, government, and economics. Keep your quality of life in mind, too—that six figure salary may not be worth it if you're not happy at the office.

Subjects You Love

Some students choose a major simply because they love the subject matter. If you love what you're studying, you're more likely to fully engage with your classes and college experience, and that can mean better grades and great relationships with others in your field. If your calling is philosophy, don't write it off just because you're not sure about graduate school, or what the job market holds for philosophers. Many liberal arts majors provide students with critical thinking skills and writing abilities that are highly valued by employers.

Undecided? Explore your interests.

If you truly have no idea what you want to study, that's okay—many schools don't require students to declare a major until you are a second-year student. That gives you four semesters to play the field. Exploring your interests will help you find your best fit major—and maybe even your ideal career.

Carrie Gracie is knowledgeable about China and its affairs. She also has a reputation as a generous colleague. She has resigned from her job as China editor because her employers will not pay her at the same rate as they pay the handful of men who do a similarly challenging and important job. She has resigned because she refused to go on colluding(共谋) with the BBC’s dishonesty about its failure to give women and men equal pay for equal work.

Gracie was recruited to the job, because she had all the talent and skills the BBC needed to cover the difficult international and domestic story of the rise of China. One of the conditions she set for taking it was equal pay with the BBC’s other international editors, familiar names including Jon Sopel in Washington and Jeremy Bowen in the Middle East.

Last summer, the government forced the BBC to publish which of the familiar names on radio and TV earned over £ 150, 000. The results exposed an astonishing pay gap. They also showed Gracie that her employers had misled her.

Gracie sets out all her efforts to get her bosses to do what they had originally promised her, but they fail to respond adequately. Instead, they prevaricate(搪塞) and offer her a pay rise that still would not have delivered equality. They thought they could buy her off. They thought that the reputational hazard(危险, 风险) she was running would scare her away from the fight.

The BBC is wrong this time! Gracie has chosen to resign rather than give in because she thinks that it is her responsibility to stop the BBC doing something stupid. She is fighting for women’s legal rights. Gracie said she hoped she wouldn’t be remembered as the woman who complained about money, but as a great journalist. She is proving that they are two sides of the same invaluable coin.

Carrie Gracie’s dispute with the BBC isn’t about money—it’s about dignity!
