It’s truly never too late to begin exercising, according to the researchers led by Pedro Saint-Maurice of the U.S. National Cancer Institute. Even for people who were “couch potatoes” in their youth, starting regular exercise in middle-age can still greatly cut the probability of death from any cause.

The study tracked the lifetime exercise patterns of more than 315,000 people. The investigators found that folks who’d exercised all their lives had a 36 percent lower risk of dying during the study period, compared to people who’d never exercised. But, perhaps surprisingly, people who’d been inactive in youth but decided to get more physical in their 40s and 50s saw almost the same decline—35 percent—in their probability of an early death.

The study also found that a mid-life start to physical activity seemed to cut the probability of death from the two major killers—heart disease and cancer. For people who began exercising in their 40s and 50s, rates of death from heart disease fell by 43 percent compared to people who’d never exercised, and the cancer death rate fell by 16 percent. Those declines were similar to those seen in people who’d exercised all their adult lives.

“This study, once again, indicates the importance of physical activity in relationship to one’s long-term mortality,” said Dr. Evelina Grayver. “Whether or not you start exercising when you are younger or older, the benefits will always be there. But starting exercising at a later age and still getting the same mortality benefit doesn’t mean that one should not exercise in younger years. Overall effects of continuous physical activity decrease the risk of an early death.”

The researchers also noted that while other research linking exercise to longevity has looked at physical activity at just one point in the lifetime, theirs is the first to examine the role of “participation in physical activity throughout the different stages of adulthood.” This new research demonstrates the crucial relationship between physical activity and the prevention of death at any age.

If you've ever been to a social gathering, you might feel awkward and uncomfortable. While social gatherings can be very enjoyable, especially when you are surrounded by people whose company you enjoy, there are social events that you sometimes find yourself wishing you were someplace else. Such occasions can sometimes be the cause of much anxiety and self-consciousness. You may even feel like everyone else is having a good time except for you. Yet the truth is that everyone has felt shy and awkward on occasion. One of the best ways to overcome self-consciousness or get past your feelings of shyness at social gatherings is to focus on the people around you. If you can remember that other people might also be feeling awkward or shy, you might find the thought of speaking to them less overwhelming.
The next time there is a social event you feel nervous about attending, you may want to try this exercise: Spend some time with your eyes closed and breathe deeply. When you feel ready, create your own zone of comfort by visualizing yourself surrounded in a warm white light that is protective yet accepting of others. Imagine people at the event being drawn to you because of the open and warm feelings that you are showing. When you arrive at the event, take a moment to spread this same light of loving acceptance to everyone around you.
Smile and greet people warmly. Try going up to someone who is standing alone and introduce yourself. When you show acceptance and openness, people can't help but respond to you in kind.
Focusing on how we can make other people at a social gathering feel at ease can help us forget about our own insecurities. The next time you attend a social gathering, invite people to join you in your zone of comfort that you have so lovingly and intentionally created. Let yourself enjoy being encircled in the warmth of their friendships.

A mysterious killer has been destroying sea stars. Scientists had thought an infection was to blame. A new study does point to bacteria as the killer. But the bacteria appear to make those sea stars unable to breathe, not infect them.

In 2013, a disease known as sea-star wasting broke out off the U.S. Pacific Coast and the sea stars there died in massive numbers. “It is hard to figure out the complex disease,” says Ian Hewson, a marine biologist at Cornell University. First, Hewson and his group found a virus in unhealthy sea stars in 2014, but later studies found no connection between it and sea-star deaths. They then explored other factors, such as differences in water temperature. They also tried exposing the animals to bacteria. But nothing reliably caused the wasting disease.

However, when comparing bacteria living with healthy sea stars with those living with unhealthy animals, the scientists found higher levels of certain types of bacteria around sick sea stars. Some bacteria were copiotrophs, which grow rapidly in areas with lots of nutrients (营养). And some were the bacteria that survive only in environments with little to no oxygen.

To re-create these conditions in the lab, the researchers added nutrients to stimulate bacterial growth in the tubs with sea stars. Sure enough, the animals got sick. When they reduced the oxygen in the water, similarly, it caused wounds in three out of every four sea stars. However, no sea star getting normal oxygen levels got sick. The study shows that copiotrophs are stealing oxygen from the water, causing sea-star wasting. Dying sea stars produce more nutrients, which may help bacteria to grow on nearby animals. “It’s a bit of a snowball effect.” Hewson says.

“The problem may worsen with climate change, because warmer waters can hold less oxygen than colder waters. Bacteria such as copiotrophs also grow rapidly in warm water. But knowing the likely cause could help experts better treat sick sea stars,” Hewson says.

As summer temperatures around the country rise, many consumers are seeing their energy bills go up rapidly. The average monthly energy bill in the U. S. was $121 in 2021, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Consumers can keep their homes cooler by using curtains or blinds and keeping them closed during the sunniest part of the day. Turing up the temperature on air conditioners by 7℃ to 10℃ for at least eight hours a day can save as much as 10% from yearly energy costs, Energy. gov reports.

Besides, a smart thermostat (恒温器) can adjust temperature and help to reduce energy bills. A smart thermostat uses Wi-Fi to connect with an app on the owner’s phone. Some models even know when the user’s phone leaves the house and adjusts the heating or cooling accordingly.

“You can raise or lower the temperature when you’re not home, so you’re not using energy in the house when you’re not going to be around to benefit from it,” says Sara Rathner, a personal finance expert. “You can also control your heating and cooling systems from wherever you are, as long as you have your phone on you.” Not all home heating and cooling systems are suitable for smart home thermostats, though. Most thermostats work best with forced air-type systems, so they won’t work with radiant (辐射的) heating systems.

Prices for smart home thermostats start at about $100 and go up from there, while a more traditional thermostat can be purchased for under $30. Rathner suggests looking for seasonal savings like Black Friday deals. Some energy providers offer discounts on new smart thermostats, too. Energy. gov has a rebate (折扣) tool to help consumers find rebates in their own state. Other high-tech devices like smart lights connected to a smart home assistant can also enable consumers to reduce unnecessary use of electricity and cut power to those that continue to draw energy even when not in use.

【小题1】What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Homes.B.Consumers.C.Air conditioners.D.Curtains and blinds.
【小题2】What can be learnt from the fourth paragraph?
A.It’s unnecessary to lower the temperature.
B.It’s easy to fix a smart heating and cooling system.
C.It’s essential to build a smart home with a smart phone.
D.It’s beyond imagination to control a home’s temperature.
【小题3】Why is Black Friday mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.People can buy things with lower prices on that day.
B.Some high-tech devices are only offered on that day.
C.Energy, gov offers discounts on smart lights.
D.Most modern and traditional devices are priced below $30.
【小题4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A smart thermostat can help save energy bills.B.A smart device can lower the temperature.
C.How to operate a smart thermostat in your house.D.The best way to keep your home cooler.
