One day in summer vacation, I was in the chemist’s shop with my son who is fifteen years old. My son is talkative and his dream is becoming a famous speaker. So he loves engaging with strangers in public if they are friendly and safe. That day he said “Hi” to a kid and began a pleasant conversation. The kid called Jack was wearing the uniform of the senior high school my son would attend next month so I pointed that out to my son. When we were leaving. Jack said, “See you at school.”

On the first day of school, Jack, who was in Senior Two, greeted my son at the school gate. They soon became good friends. When I went to pick up my son after school, they walked out side by side. Jack’s mother stopped her car, too. However, as I was packing my car with groceries, I found my son’s new uniforms were missing and we felt extremely anxious. Seeing the scene like this, Jack’s mother constantly comforted us. She drove up behind me and promised to offer me a bag of uniforms that no longer fitted her son. She gave me those clothes for nothing! I was overjoyed and I went and picked them up from her the next afternoon.

This may seem like a small kindness to some people but for me it is huge! I have been stressing quite a lot about the cost of uniforms for school. We are attempting to start a business with no capital and have financial difficulties at the moment. I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety and have had the really worst year in my life. I cannot even begin to explain how much I appreciate this small gesture from a complete stranger. It has relieved a bit of a burden from my shoulders. You never know when the small kindnesses, even simply a smile on the street, can be incredibly uplifting to a complete stranger

I asked Jack’s mother for her contact information, and in the following days we kept in touch, and gradually we became good friends, too.

I remember a time when I learned the true meaning of forgiveness. It was a period in my life that tested my patience and my ability to understand others.

It all started when I was in middle school. I had a close friend named Emily, and we spent a lot of time together. One day, Emily introduced me to a new girl in our class, named Olivia. Olivia was quiet and shy, but we quickly became friends as well.

One afternoon, after school, we were all working on a project in the classroom. As we were discussing our ideas, Olivia suddenly exclaimed out something that completely contradicted what I had been saying. I was shocked and felt a little embarrassed. I tried to explain my point of view, but Olivia was very stubborn and insisted on her own idea.

Emily, who was sitting next to me, tried to mediate (调节) the situation. But Olivia got angry and said some unkind words to me. I was hurt and angry, and I couldn’t believe that Olivia would treat me like that. I stormed out of the classroom, leaving Emily and Olivia behind.

The next few days were very difficult for me. I avoided Olivia as much as possible, and our friendship with Emily seemed to be stressed. I felt like I had been betrayed by Olivia, and I couldn’t understand why she would do such a thing.

One day, I asked Emily why she was still friends with Olivia after what she had done. Emily looked at me with a sad expression and said, “You know, Olivia has been through a lot lately. Her parents are going through a divorce, and she’s really struggling. Maybe she was rude to you because she was feeling overwhelmed and insecure.”

Hearing this, I felt a surge of guilt. I realized that I hadn’t taken the time to understand Olivia’s situation. I had been too quick to judge her and too focused on my own feelings of hurt. I decided to talk to Olivia and apologize for my behavior.

Marie had always dreamed of becoming a professional dancer and was preparing for a high-level dance competition which was aimed to draw excellent dancers from all over the country. It was a prestigious (负有盛名的) event, and Marie knew that if she wanted to make a name for herself in the world of ballet, this was her chance. She spent every waking moment practicing, determined to give it her all on the big day.

When the day of the competition arrived, Marie was nervous but excited. She had trained hard for this moment for years and felt confident in her well-prepared dancing. As she walked onto the stage, the bright lights blinded her momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure and began to dance.

The music swirled around her as she moved gracefully across the stage. Her movements were fluid and precise, each step perfectly executed. The audience watched in awe as Marie danced, completely lost in the moment.

But then, it happened. During a particularly difficult jump, Marie landed awkwardly on her ankle and felt a sharp pain shoot up her leg. She tried to ignore it and continue dancing, but the pain was too much. She fell to the floor, clutching her leg in agony.

Paramedics rushed onto the stage to tend to her, and Marie was taken to the hospital. The diagnosis was devastating: she had torn several ligaments (韧带) in her ankle and would need extensive surgery to repair the damage. Marie was held by desperate shock. She had worked so hard to get where she was, and now it seemed like all of her dreams were slipping away. For weeks, Marie was confined to a wheelchair, unable to move without assistance. She felt helpless and alone, wondering if she would ever be able to dance again.

Mo was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything ...Miss Perfect!

“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today,” said Nima, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Mo again, “So what’s wrong with her?” asked Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I.” said Mo. “But she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she ignored all my calls and texts.   And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy. She’s forgotten who her friends are!” said Mo angrily. “Are you listening to me?” Mr Reed was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Mo gave Nima a worried look and followed them.

Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Mo couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? “Stop writing and put your pens down.” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

Mo wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. Mo went to the library to study, but she couldn’t concentrate. She didn’t know what to do about Terry.   She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. “It isn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time.” thought Mo. Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed ...”

Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam that afternoon. Mo was feeling terrible. Why had she told Mr Reed? But it was too late now. And anyway, Terry didn’t want to be her friend! Mr Reed wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry was cheating in the exam.
