I’m not a tea person. I do keep a box of assorted (什锦) teas on hand for company and for being sociable. One day, feeling troubled, I pulled out the tea box.

Camomile (洋甘菊) is one of the teas that always get left over after people have picked out their favorites. I gave the neglected camomile a sniff. It didn't really smell like anything. According to the box, it promotes relaxation. So does a cup of hot water, which is most similar to camomile tea. Over a cup of camomile tea, something happened.

I was transported to someplace very specific: my uncle Cliff’s farm. Uncle Cliff was one of the best land farmers in North Dakota. Scents (气味) help evoke memories. I found the cats hanging around the farm always showed up at milking time, waiting for Uncle Cliff to lose a drop of milk. But he never lost a drop.

At Grandma’s house, you could never be in trouble. You could do anything that interested you. Even if you rolled in the mud, everyone still thought you were good enough. Everyone laughed as often as they could. Even if they were laughing at you, it was OK. Grandma has soft wrinkly skin, and she loves you so much. She's right here, in the steam.

There will always be troubles in life, and I won't solve them all. But if I can bury my face in Grandma’s flowered apron, if I can be a 6-year-old girl again, just by drinking a cup of camomile tea, that’s what I'm going to do.

What’s So Funny?

In 1990, during a performance of my stage play, I kept focusing myself on one particular member of the audience. While everybody else laughed, there she sat, staring at the floor, with her fingers in her ears. I’ll never forget her look of discomfort. That woman was my mother. I wish I could say her reaction that evening was an incident, but it was one of many I remember when I was first starting out as a playwright.

Although I’d established myself as a humourist, my mother never found me or my work particularly funny. We loved each other deeply, of course, but she was my hardest critic. “Is Drew really that funny?” she’d ask family members. To make matters worse, the feeling was mutual (相互的): though our social circle swore that she was funny, I never saw it. How could she be funny? My mother was supposedly very funny in her first language, Anishinaabemowin, but I didn’t speak it. One of the characteristics of the language is that it is structured for maximum amusement.

For a while I was convinced I would never make her laugh. Then, in 2005, I succeeded. I had published a book called, Me Funny. In it were dozens of essays deconstructing (解构) the humour in Anishinaabemowin. They cracked her up so much that she looked at me and declared, “Wow, that was funny!” I remember being relieved and very pleased.

In 2009, my mother passed away. I was in charge of planning the funeral along with two cousins. Because my mother was a shy woman, I can guarantee she would have found our group effort quite embarrassing. During the funeral, amidst the tears, family member after family member got up and recounted things she had done and said over the years. To my surprise, I found myself laughing. More and more stories about her surfaced. We laughed as we remembered her.

I couldn’t see my mother’s forest for my own trees. I wish I could have shared those laughs with her while she was alive, but I’m glad I finally made the connection.

Snapchat is rolling out parental controls that allow parents to see their teenager’s contacts and report to the social media company — without their child’s knowledge — any accounts that may worry them.

The goal, executives say, is to enable parents to monitor their child’s connections without giving up teens’ autonomy (自主性). Named Family Center, the new suite of tools released Tuesday requires both caregiver and teen to be involved in.

“It allows parents to see who’s in their teen’s universe,” said Nona Farahnik, director of platform policy for Snap, the company that makes Snapchat. “It offers parents the ability to ask who someone might be, how they might know a contact, which improves those real-time conversations about who teens are talking to.”

Farahnik says Family Center is modeled on real-life parenting. “If your teen is headed to the mall, you might ask who they’re going with. ‘How do you know them? Are you guys on a sports team together? Do you go to school together?’” said Farahnik. “But you won’t be sitting there at the mall with them listening to their conversations.” Similarly, parents cannot see the content that their teen is sending or receiving on Snapchat. They can only view whom their child has communicated with in the past seven days. Snapchat is popular with young people, partially because messages on the platform disappear within 24 hours.

The company says it consulted with safety experts and academics and conducted focus groups with parents to develop Family Center and it plans to roll out more features in the coming months. The tool is only for parents of kids under 18.

With Family Center, Snap follows other social media platforms, including Instagram, which recently have advanced parental controls. By at least one survey, Snapchat is the second-most popular social network among teens. The first, TikTok, offers “Family Sharing,” which gives parents a few ways to limit the videos shown to their kids.

“I think these platforms want to show that they can take steps to protect kids, that they can self-regulate and that they’re capable of doing it themselves without getting the government involved,” said Irene Ly, policy counsel for Common Sense Media, which reviews apps, games and media for families.

【小题1】Who are probably the potential users of Family Center?
A.Children who love computer games.B.Parents who worry about their children.
C.Parents whose children are under 18.D.Family members who live in harmony.
【小题2】What can we learn about Family Center?
A.It enables parents to know what their children talk about.
B.Parents can read messages sent or received by their children.
C.Children can cancel messages on their phones within 24 hours.
D.Parents can know who their children contact without children’s permission.
【小题3】Why do young people favor Snapchat?
A.Because they can know whom they have communicated with.
B.Because contact information on it can’t be read a day later.
C.Because it offers a few ways to limit the videos shown to them.
D.Because parents can monitor their connections without giving up autonomy.
【小题4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Family Center: Snapchat’s new parental controls
B.Family Sharing: TikTok’s new parental controls
