For thousands of years, the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub. In fact, until a place has a church and a pub, it is not really considered a community worthy of a name. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, where the people gather together to socialize and exchange news. They are institutions at the heart of British society. After all, the word ‘pub’ is actually short for ‘public house’.

As a result, British pubs are often old and well preserved. Many of them have become historic sites. that tourists visit. One of the most famous examples is the city of Nottingham called “The Old Trip to Jerusalem”, which dates back to the year AD 1189 and is probably the oldest pub in England. It was the same year in which kings Richard the first came into power, who led the First Crusade into the Holy Land, towards Jerusalem.

Many British pubs have old names referring to governors, such as The King's Head or The Queen Victoria, but of course this doesn’t mean they are only for kings and queens. Pubs have always welcome people from all classes and parts of society. On a cold night, the pub's landlord or landlady can always find a warm place for you by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price.

That’s how things used to be. but there are worrying signs that things are beginning to change. Economic downturns, governmental financial measures, and cultural changes are causing many pubs to go out of business. People do not have a lot of spare money to spend on beer. On top of that, in 2007 smoking was banned in all public indoor spaces, including pubs, which may also have affected the numbers of customers going to pubs since then.

This decline is happening despite the fact that pubs are now allow by law to stay open after 11 pm. Previously, with 11 pm as closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking is known as “binge drinking”, and it causes long-term health problems individuals and problems with violent crime for communities. The UK government is trying to find ways of discouraging binge drinking, and regularly spends money on television commercials to warn people of the problems of king too much.

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is going digital.

To reflect “the change”, many mobile budgeting apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service to children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children’s accounts, set limits and monitor transactions. Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.

These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts, such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For example, the Swedish app Gimi — 1.2 million users globally — has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.

Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. “You don’t become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says.

But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking &Finance, warns people that while digital tools can help, there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education. The area should “have regular, designed classroom time and ideally should be taught as an independent subject”, she says. “Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money.”

With only a click of the mouse, rumors(谣言)can be forwarded between micro- blogs(微博)very quickly. As an example, recently, sensitive netizens discovered that some photos displayed on microblogs describing Beijing’s June rainstorm had actually been fabricated(伪造).

Sina.com is one of the major Internet portals (入口)in China with hundreds and thousands of users, and a majority of celebrities and famous citizens have their microblog accounts on this portal. As recently as six months ago, the website decided to establish a specialized team to prove rumors and provide accurate information for its users. Tan Chao is in charge of the team.

“Before I took the job, I usually couldn’t identify what information was real and what was fake. But during the process of identification, we discovered that a lot of information was false, including fake photos, fake news stories and rumors that had been spread through microblogs.”

It’s not just website portals which are taking on fact-checking responsibilities, but also a number of civic-minded netizens, who recently set up a Rumor Identification Federation on Sina.com’s microblog system to help netizens identify fake information online.

Dian Zizheng is the team leader of the federation. He says they’ve publicized more than 150 pieces which contradict rumors, which attracted more than 10 thousand visitors within two months.

“We live in an age of new media, so we can’t use the old methods to prove rumors. We can’t wait for the media to prove the facts with related administrative(行政) departments and then release a formal announcement. We can’t allow rumors to run wild and then deal with it, we need to fight rumors while they’re spreading. I think that this is the best way to deal with rumors nowadays.”

Some experts say this displays the advantages of the internet compared to other traditional media. The open platform allows information to be examined and clarified by netizens. But experts like Ding Wengguo, President of the Journalism and Communication College at the China University of Political Science and Law says this self-correction function of the Internet is still quite limited.

“It’s still quite different to tell which information is true in such an open environment by just reading a number of different opinions on the same issue. This is something which we need to pay attention to. If society is flooded with too much false information, and it’s allowed to spread in such a fast manner, then people will be suspicious(怀疑的) of all kinds of information including important information from authorities. It also worsens problems relating to social communications and mutual-understanding, which in turn harms society as a whole.”

Experts suggest that the government should react more quickly in the Internet age. Once a rumor begins to spread, administrative departments should make announcements as early as possible to drive away rumors before they lead to bad outcomes.
